New Orleans, LA, United States (AHN) - Fishing vessels helping with clean-up operations in Louisiana were recalled Wednesday just as BP began its "top kill" procedure. Fuel continues to gush out of the sunken rig in the Gulf Coast while commercial fishing remains closed and more than 200 turtles and nearly two dozen dolphins have died.
All 125 boats outfitted for oil recovery operations in Breton Sound were recalled late afternoon after four crew members fell ill, said the unified command, a multi-agency operation that includes the departments of Defense, Commerce, Interior and Homeland Security, Fish and Wildlife Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Crew members of three vessels reported experiencing nausea, chest pains, dizziness and headaches. One of them was evacuated by helicopter to West Jefferson Hospital in Louisiana; another was brought to the same hospital by boat. The remaining two were transported by ambulance.
Other crew members of the three vessels who felt ill refused treatment at the dock, but they were ordered to return to their temporary housing in Breton Sound, where they were to be medically evaluated together with crew members of all vessels.
“No other personnel are reporting symptoms, but we are taking this action as an extreme safeguard,” Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Robinson Cox, an assistant safety officer, said in a statement.
The recalled fishing boats are among 1,300 vessels engaged in cleaning up the Gulf Cost more than a month after Transocean's Deepwater Horizon drilling unit exploded on April 20. Three sections of piping on the seabed were damaged in the blast that killed 11 people and left three others critically wounded.
About 11 million gallons of oil-water mix have been recovered since clean-up efforts began last month.
The oil reached the coastlines of the Gulf states over the past week as officials warned that wetlands and marshes in Louisiana would die five days after being hit.
A total of 220 sea turtles and 22 dolphins have died from the leak, according to NOAA, while 223 other sea turtles are being treated in a rehabilitation center.
It is nesting season for sea turtles, which lay their eggs from March to June on or near the beach where they were born. Florida, which has begun efforts to rescue manatees, hosts the largest nesting population of sea turtles in the Northwest Atlantic.
NASA images of the leak early this month showed the oil as a dull gray color in the shape of a letter "U" some distance from the Mississippi Delta. Images this week show the spill already surrounding the delta.
About 840,000 gallons of chemical dispersants have been released by crews to break down the slick, despite concerns from advocacy groups about the effect of dispersants in the ocean.
The Pentagon had assured critics by citing NOAA and saying "studies were completed long before the accident to test dispersant and determine if the benefit outweighed the possible negative effects."
On Wednesday, however, the unified command announced that scientists and federal and state agencies are working "to address key questions arising from the unprecedented use of chemical dispersants."
The closure of recreational and commercial fishing in the Gulf was expanded this week, and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke declared a disaster to extend federal aid to affected fishermen and businesses in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Early this month, officials said fuel from the rig was leaking at a rate of 5,000 barrels or 210,000 gallons a day. The flow rate has since then been scrapped, and a "flow rate technical group" has been created to determine exactly how much is spewing into the ocean.
"With the source of the oil 5,000 feet under the ocean’s surface, it has been extremely difficult to estimate oil flow rate in an environment that prohibits human access," the unified command said. "The FRTG is leading a coordinated effort across the federal government to determine oil flow rates from the spill at multiple time periods following the explosion, fire and sinking of the oil rig in order to compute total outflow."
Previous attempts to stem the flow with the use of a containment dome have proved unsuccessful, and BP has faced growing criticisms for its response to the disaster.
The company, which owns the oil leaking into the ocean and operates the license on which Transocean's rig was drilling, refused to release live footage of the fuel gushing out of its damaged well for federal scientists to examine until days after the blast.
BP is under investigation for ignoring safety issues and falsely informing the government that it had a contingency plan for large-scale spills. Its close relationship with the Minerals Management Service, which oversees offshore drilling, is also under scrutiny.
The company said Thursday morning its "top kill" procedure continued without any issues overnight. The method involves injecting heavy drilling fluids down into the leaking well, and may take two days to complete.
"Should the top kill not succeed in fully stopping the flow of oil and gas from the well, BP would then intend to move forward to deployment of the LMRP cap containment system," the company said in an earlier update.
BP is also digging two relief wells to relieve pressure from the sunken rig's existing well. The drilling is expected to take three months.
