Pittsburgh, PA, United States (AHN) - American Eagle Outfitters announced Wednesday fiscal first quarter earnings fell 50 percent due to charges related to closing the Martin+Osa clothing line.
The teen clothing retailer said first quarter earnings were $10.9 million or 5 cents a share, down from $22 million or 11 cents a share in the same period a year earlier.
Excluding one-time charges related to Martin+Osa, the company said it earned 17 cents a share. The result was in line with estimates, which generally do not include one-time costs.
Revenue grew about 8 percent in the period to $659.4 million, topping estimates for $656.3 million.
"The first quarter demonstrated progress toward our goals. We achieved higher sales and stronger profitability," said Jim O'Donnell, chief executive officer. "We remain focused on our priority to deliver margin improvement and earnings growth, with the ultimate goal of reaching our mid-teen operating margin target."
Gross profit grew to 39.7 percent of sales, up from 37.2 percent last year. Margins gains were mainly due to lower merchandise markdowns.
Looking forward, American Eagle expects second quarter earnings of 12 to 16 cents a share. Analysts are looking for 21 cents a share.
