Sri Lankan military jets bomb rebel positions
AP - 2 hours 26 minutes ago
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Sri Lankan air force jets bombed two Tamil Tiger rebel locations Saturday in the island's north, where government troops are trying to capture the insurgents' de facto capital, the military said.
Fighter jets targeted a rebel stronghold and a mortar launching position in the Paranthan area north of the rebel headquarters at Kilinochchi, the military said in a statement.
Pilots confirmed that the raids were successful, it said, without giving casualty details.
Rebel officials could not be contacted for comment because most communication lines to rebel territory have been severed.
The military has increased its air strikes on northern targets in recent weeks in a bid to soften rebel resistance to soldiers trying to enter Kilinochchi.
Government troops have been able to move deep into rebel territory and capture a number of key bases and towns but are still locked in heavy battles at the edge of Kilinochchi.
Tamil Tiger rebels have fought since 1983 to create an independent state for ethnic minority Tamils. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the violence.
