Skiing: Svindal wins on same hill where he crashed last year
AFP - Saturday, December 6
BEAVER CREEK, Colorado (AFP) - - Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal won the World Cup men's downhill ski race here Friday, conquering the Birds of Prey course upon which he crashed a year ago and suffered severe injuries.
Svindal won in 1min 43.85sec, 0.06 ahead of runner-up Marco Buechel of Liechtenstein with Canada's Erik Guay third in 1:44.20.
"It was incredible to see the others descend and not finish ahead of me," Svindal said. "With this success, I think I've returned as good as new, or at least before my accident."
Last year, Svindal was the reigning World Cup overall champion when he suffered a flying crash during a training run, suffering a broken nose, cuts to his face, a deep gash in his left thigh and the loss of several teeth.
That crash was basically the end of his season and the start of a long and painful rehabilitation that paid off in victory.
"It's not revenge," Svindal said. "It's not the same conditions. I'm not the same person. Normally when I win, I jump in the air but this is really very special."
Svindal, 25, joined Switzerland's Daniel Albrecht atop the World Cup downhill standings.
Austrian Hermman Maier, who won a Super-G last week at Lake Louise, was more than a minute off Svindal's pace while Swiss reigning World Cup downhill champion Didier Cuche was 15th.
Racing continues with a Super-G on Saturday and a giant slalom on Sunday.
The International Ski Federation (FIS) also announced that the men's World Cup super-combined event cancelled here Thursday due to heavy snow has been rescheduled for Val d'Isere, France, on December 12.
