New $1 million Nilsson classical music prize
By LOUISE NORDSTROM,Associated Press Writer AP - Saturday, December 6
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A $1 million classical music prize has been established to commemorate the late Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson.
The prize is the largest to be awarded in the history of classical music and is to celebrate outstanding achievements in the international field of opera and concert, the Birgit Nilsson Foundation announced Friday. The foundation said it was creating the prize according to the singer's wishes.
Nilsson, acclaimed as the greatest Wagnerian soprano of the post-World War II generation, died Dec. 25, 2005, having retired from a career of almost 40 years on the world's opera stages from New York's Metropolitan Opera to La Scala in Milan.
The amount of the prize approaches the 10 million kronor ($1.2 million) award that goes with the Nobel Prizes.
It is to be awarded every two or three years. Those eligible are singers and directors in opera and concert, along with specific productions by an opera company.
The first Birgit Nilsson prize winner is expected to be announced in early 2009 and was selected by Nilsson herself. Foundation officials said the name is being kept in a sealed envelope according to Nilsson's request and will be opened upon the official announcement date.
Subsequent winners will be recommended by prominent figures within the classical music scene who will sit on a jury for a three-year term. The foundation council will make the final decision on the winner.
Hannes Hultcrantz, a spokesman for the prize, said the prize ceremony is most likely to be held in Stockholm, but that it has not yet been decided. The awards ceremony is also to be held around October.
Nilsson set up the foundation in the late 1980's to celebrate achievements within classical music.
