Late unionist Ho See Beng "served Singapore with loyalty and distinction"
Channel NewsAsia - 1 hour 56 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said the late first president of NTUC, Mr Ho See Beng, had served Singapore with loyalty and distinction and that he had made invaluable contributions as a member of parliament and union leader.
Writing to Mrs Ho, Mr Lee expressed his heartfelt condolences on the death of Mr Ho, who passed away on Friday at the age of 90.
Mr Lee said the late unionist was an unflinching and resolute fighter, committed to improving the lives of workers and the plight of marginalised groups.
Because Mr Ho was effectively bilingual in English and Mandarin and spoke several dialects, it helped him bond with residents.
For his many contributions to Singapore, Mr Ho was awarded the Bintang Bakti Masyarakat (lintang) or the Public Service Star (Bar) in 1990.
Mr Ho was the chairman of NTUC from 1962 to 1964 and its secretary—general from 1966 to 1967.
Mr Lee said Mr Ho has lived a full and meaningful life.
Mr Ho was not given much but rose to a position of leadership and used it to fight for the common man. His life has made a difference to Singapore.
