Sri Lanka's air force bombs rebels in north
AP - 2 hours 29 minutes ago
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Sri Lanka's air force carried out a series of raids Friday on Tamil Tiger rebels trying to resist a government campaign to seize their de facto capital, the military said.
Air force helicopters pounded a rebel position in Adampan village, west of the rebel headquarters Kilinochchi, and fighter jets bombed rebels in Paranthan village, north of the rebel town, the military said in a statement.
The military did not release casualty details but said the targets were successfully hit.
Tamil Tiger rebels could not be contacted for comment because communications to their territory have been cut.
The air strikes came a day after the government said its troops had seized two rebel-held villages _ more signs of the government's recent dominance in the island's 25-year civil war.
Government troops have forced the rebels out of a number of key villages and towns but face heavy resistance at the edge of Kilinochchi.
The rebels have fought since 1983 to create an independent state for ethnic minority Tamils. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the violence.
