UN treaty boosts protection for endangered species
By ARIEL DAVID,Associated Press Writer AP - Saturday, December 6
ROME - Cheetahs, dolphins, and other endangered species will receive extra protection from hunters, pollution and climate change under measures approved Friday at an international wildlife conference.
Representatives of 85 governments who met in Rome this week agreed to boost conservation measures for 21 migratory species, the U.N. Environment Program said in a statement.
The members of the U.N.-administered Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals also agreed to reduce the noise pollution from ships and other sources that is threatening dolphins and whales, who use sound to communicate and orient themselves.
The intergovernmental treaty obligates countries to take measures such as banning hunting of threatened species, removing obstacles to their migration and protecting their habitats from pollution and the effects of climate change.
New entries into the list of protected species include the cheetah, the world's fastest land animal, whose population has declined 90 percent over the past century, as well as seven species of dolphin from across the world's oceans.
The Egyptian vulture, increasingly poisoned by pesticides, and an Asian duck decimated by its status as a delicacy in the continent's cuisine also made the list.
"The conference has shown its confidence in our strategy, and increased our budget modestly in real terms despite the global financial crisis," said Robert Hepworth, executive secretary of the convention. "However we now have to stretch our resources that much further still to protect the birds, mammals and marine creatures which journey around planet earth."
Some NGOs that are partners in the treaty were unhappy with the outcome, saying that increasing the budget by 3.3 percent over the next three years was not enough, given that so many new species were added.
"This is a slap in the face of the future of species conservation," said Nicolas Entrup, spokesman for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, a Britain-based NGO.
