Official says Papua New Guinea landslide kills 10
AP - 55 minutes ago
PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea - A landslide has killed at least 10 people near a gold mine in remote Papua New Guinea, an official said Saturday as an Australian team flew to the South Pacific island nation to lead the search for survivors.
Three people have been pulled alive from the mud unleashed by heavy rains Thursday near a Canadian company's mine in the rugged Eastern Highlands province, Australian aid representative to Papua New Guinea Bill Costello said. Others are still believed to be buried alive under the debris.
The slide destroyed miners' accommodations at an exploration camp two miles (three kilometers) from the Barrick Gold Corp.'s Kainantu mine as well as a foot path linking local communities, he said. The bodies of five miners and five others have been retrieved, Costello said.
The Papua New Guinea government asked Australia on Friday to send help because Barrick geologists believe that there is a chance that more survivors remain trapped under the earth, he said.
"The reason we got involved is because ... there is some chance that there might be cavities in the slip site where people could be alive and they specifically needed search-and-rescue expertise for that reason," Costello told The Associated Press.
"The slip has happened where there's a pathway between different communities, and they have no way of knowing how many people were walking along the track at the time of the incident," he added.
A five-member specialist search-and-rescue team flew to the Papua New Guinea capital of Port Moresby on Saturday with two dogs trained to find people, Costello said.
They will continue their journey to the site of the landslide, 400 miles (650 kilometers) northwest of Port Moresby, Costello said. They are expected to begin their work early Sunday, he said.
Barrick's Australia-Pacific regional president Joc O'Rourke said in a statement that the miners had removed most of the debris from the site by Saturday.
"This is a very tragic natural disaster that has directly affected our employees and the local community," he said.
"All our people have been accounted for, but search efforts will continue" with the aid of Papua New Guinea and Australian government rescue experts, he added.
