RugbyU: Four-try Stade back to winning ways
AFP - Sunday, December 21
PARIS (AFP) - - Four-try Stade Francais thrashed title rivals Bayonne 35-8 here on Saturday to regain the winning habit following two defeats to Harlequins in the European Cup.
At the half-way stage of the French Top 14 Championship, early-season leaders Stade remain in second spot, three behind leaders and defending champions Toulouse, and more importantly, 10 points ahead of the fifth-placed club Clermont, with four qualifying for the end-of-season playoffs.
It was only Bayonne's fourth defeat in 13 matches but their form against the big teams is in question having also lost to Toulouse and Perpignan by big margins. They remain fourth, two points ahead of last season's runners-up Clermont.
In other matches, Toulouse beat bottom club Mont-de-Marsan 27-6 and third-placed Perpignan had a 16-9 victory over Castres although New Zealand star Dan Carter missed four penalties for the Catalonians.
Montpellier had a 33-8 victory over struggling Toulon to put them within shouting distance of fifth-placed Clermont, who won 20-16 at Dax on Friday night.
Bayonne, who had captain Remy Martin returning to Paris to meet his former club for the first time since his summer transfer, never really got into the match from start to finish and Stade got their offensive bonus point.
On the half-hour, Stade were already 15-3 ahead. The first try began from a difficult feed from a scrum to Juan Martin Hernandez who passed to stand-in fullback Guillaume Bousses.
Bousses used his footballing skills to get the ball to Mirco Bergamasco who touched down to give the home side an 8-3 lead on 13 minutes.
The second Parisian try came from good forward play. Just five minutes from Bayonne's line, Dimitri Szarzewski found Juan Manuel Leguizamon right at the back of a line-out and his pass found Pierre Rabadan, who scored the try putting them 15-3 in front on 29 minutes.
The good line-out play by Stade Francais showed a great deal of improvement since the Harlequins fixture. Against Bayonne, Stade lost no line-outs from their own throw-in and won two off of their opponents.
The Paris forwards dominated the scrum though a weak point had been the missed kicks of Hernandez with the wind in his face though he found his touch in his passing play after the break to feed Szarzewski to go over the line in the 48th minute to make it 23-3.
Bayonne had trouble getting out of their own half though did manage a 55th minute consolation try through prop Rodney Blake, bringing the score to 25-8.
Stade Francais still had some work to do however to get the offensive bonus point and they duly took it in the 64th minute from a scrum in the middle of the field when Geoffroy Messina managed to touch down in the corner although being tackled by Bayonne fullback Pepito Elhorga for a good Christmas present.
Stade's backs coach Christophe Dominici had nothing but praise for his team.
"We played well in the forward battles and the line-outs," Dominici said.
"This squad never gives up and is a good team unit. You could even see youngsters bringing more experienced players up to a higher level.
"This squad has a real desire to work hard and after this victory the players deserve to celebrate."
Bayonne captain Martin admitted it had not been easy to play against his former teammates.
"Mentally it was hard to play against guys I had played alongside for so many years (Martin played at Stade Francais from 2001 to 2008)," he said.
"It was a very hard match charged with emotion and I think we have let things slip too quickly against the top clubs (...) We still have a long way to go before we can beat teams like this.
"Now we mustn't go too mad during the Christmas holidays and do well in our first match back against Castres."
