Bangladesh ups security for ex-PM after threat
AP - 2 hours 3 minutes ago
DHAKA, Bangladesh - Bangladesh's interim government has beefed up security for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after a media report claimed Islamic militants were plotting to assassinate her ahead of next week's elections, a top government adviser said Sunday.
Home Affairs Adviser M.A. Matin said Hasina, who leads a key party in the election race, was given extra protection after Indian television station CNN-IBN reported the alleged plot. The report Saturday cited unnamed Indian intelligence officials as saying a six-member suicide squad from Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami, an Islamic group banned by Bangladesh, was planning an attempt on her life.
"There's no possibility of an attack on Sheikh Hasina. We've taken the highest security measures," Matin told reporters in Dhaka.
Matin, a key adviser of Bangladesh's military-backed interim government, said authorities were examining the news report of the CNN-IBN.
Hasina, the chief of the Bangladesh Awami League party, is touring the country ahead of the elections slated for Dec. 29.
In 2004, suspected Islamic militants attempted to assassinate Hasina by throwing grenades during a political rally. She was not hurt, but the attack left more than 20 people dead and hundreds wounded.
Bangladesh, a nation of 150 million people, has witnessed two presidents slain in military coups since it gained independence from Pakistan in 1971.
It has been a parliamentary democracy since 1991, when a pro-democracy movement ended the country's latest military regime.
