EU tops off aid to civilians displaced in southern Philippines
AFP - 1 hour 46 minutes ago
MANILA (AFP) - - The European Union has approved a fresh grant of 2.5 million euros (3.4 million dollars) for civilians displaced by a Muslim separatist conflict in the southern Philippines.
The fresh funding tops off a seven million-euro assistance extended for the victims of the conflict in the Mindanao region in October, the EU's executive arm, the European Commission, said in a statement.
This "will allow the EC's humanitarian assistance with food, shelter and sanitation for the internally-displaced persons in Mindanao to be extended for a further few months," it added.
The 40 year-old rebellion flared in August after the Supreme Court blocked a draft peace agreement that would have given the large Muslim minority control over large areas of the south, which they claim as their ancestral domain.
President Gloria Arroyo has since shelved peace talks.
Alistair MacDonald, Head of EC delegation to the Philippines who visited the conflict areas earlier this month, said "the situation remains very serious."
He said there were "some 310,000 persons still displaced, and with almost 60,000 of those taking shelter in evacuation centres, which are by no means adequate for anything more than short-term relief."
The fresh EU aid would be channelled through the World Food Programme and the International Organisation for Migration, the commission said.
