Denmark's Peter Gade in surprise semi-final win
AFP - 1 hour 51 minutes ago
KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia (AFP) - - Top seeded Lee Chong Wei will take on Peter Gade of Denmark in the men's singles final of the BWF World Super Series Masters Finals on Sunday after the Dane's surprise semi-final win.
Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro was shown the exit by Gade in the semi-final Saturday with the game over in just 30 minutes after the Dane raced to a 21-10, 21-10 win.
"Winning 10 and 10 is a very good result against a player like Sony. I did not expect to win so easily. I controlled the net and handled the wind well," said Gade, who is seeded No 4.
The shell shocked Indonesian, who won the Indonesian Open and the back to back Japan Open and China Masters, said he was distracted.
"I was not in the right frame mind for the match. Something was disturbing me but it not the excuse for my defeat," he said.
Lee, however, had a surprisingly easy time beating his old rival, former world No 1 Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia 21-5, 21-10 in the second semi-final match Saturday.
Lee has the upper hand, having defeated Gade in a preliminary group match on Friday, but the Malaysian ace was quick to point out that the final would be a different match altogether.
"I did not make any mistakes and it was one of my easiest wins over Taufik. He lost his rhythm and this is something that will happen to every player," Lee said.
The Beijing Olympic Games silver medalist is so far unbeaten in the competition and will bring home 40,000 dollars if he beats Gade again on Sunday.
The season-ending Super Series Masters Finals began Thursday in Kota Kinabalu in the eastern state of Sabah on Borneo island. It offers a total purse of 500,000 dollars.
In the men's doubles, former All-England champions Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong will face the tough Korean pair, Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae, who overcame the top seeds Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan 22-20, 15-21, 21-16 in the second semi-final.
In the first semi-final Saturday afternoon, Koo-Tan knocked out Malaysian team mates Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari 22-20, 21-14 in 31 minutes.
"If we win the Super Series title it will be our first big title this year. Frankly, it is more than we expected reaching this far in the competition," said Koo.
It will be an all-Hong Kong women's singles final for the 40,000 dollar prize with top seed and hot favourite Zhou Mi giving strong signals that she is the one to beat for the title.
In Saturday's semi-final matches, Zhou Mi outplayed Denmark's Tine Rasmussen 21-13, 21-16 in only 31 minutes. In the other semi-final, Wang Chen was fully stretched by India's rising star Saina Nehwal before winning 15-21, 21-14, 21-16 in 42 minutes.
"I seem to have a lot of fans here. They have been fantastic and have given me a lot of support. I aim to go out and reward them with more entertaining badminton in the final, she said.
When asked of her chances against third seed Wang Chen who beat her 21-12, 21-15 in their opening Group A match, Zhou Mi said "it will be a different ball game in the final."
In the women's doubles finals, top seeds Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty from Malaysia will face second seed Indonesian pair, Vita Marissa-Lilyana Natsir.
Chin-Wong beat Koreans Ha Jung Eun-Kim Min Jung 14-21, 21-19, 21-17 in one semi-final while Marissa-Natsir saw off compatriots Jo Novita/Greysia Polii 21-19, 21-17 in the other.
In the mixed doubles finals, top seeds Nova Widianto-Lilyana Natsir will meet Denmark's Thomas Laybourn-Kamilia Rytter, the number two seeds.
Widianto and Natsir only needed 36 minutes to down English pair Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg 23-21, 21-17 in the evening's semi-final, while in the afternoon Laybourn and Rytter took a minute longer to dispose the Thair pair of Sudket Prapakamol and Suralee Thoungthongkam (THAx5) 21-17, 22-20.
