Hurricane Jimena off Mexico upgraded to Category 4: NHC
AFP - Monday, August 31
MIAMI (AFP) - - Hurricane Jimena, churning in the Pacific Ocean off the western coast of Mexico, strengthened Sunday into a dangerous Category Four storm, the National Hurricane Center said.

Jimena has already caused "intense heavy rain with flooding in the lowlands and landslides in mountains" in the states of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco on the Pacific coast, a Mexican weather official said earlier Saturday.
The US weather officials, based in Miami, said the massive storm was moving toward the northwest at about nine miles (15 kilometers) per hour, packing sustained winds of nearly 135 miles (215 kilometers) per hour.
"Jimena is an extremely dangerous Category Four hurricane," the NHC said, predicting "some additional strengthening" during the coming 24 hours.
The Category Four storm was just one notch below the most dangerous possible category on the one-to-five Saffir-Simpon scale.
At 1500 GMT, Jimena was located about 285 miles (460 kilometers) south of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico and about 515 miles (825 kilometers) south of the southern tip of Baja California.
The Miami-based center earlier said landfall was unlikely and that Jimena would remain offshore, moving parallel to the west coast of Mexico.
In its most recent advisory, it said the storm is projected to make "a gradual turn toward the north-northwest ... over the next couple of days," moving away from the Mexican mainland.
