Japan suffer 59-year world championship low
AFP - Monday, August 31
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AFP) - - Japan suffered an embarrassing world championship wipeout on Sunday when for the first time in 59 years their highly-regarded men's team failed to win a title.

Their last hope, double world champion Yasuyuki Muneta missed out on a medal when he suffered a third round loss to Mongolia's Gankhuyag Dorjpalam in their +100kg bout.
The defeat completed a miserable downward spiral for Japan's men's team who until 1973 won all golds on offer at the world championships.
Shinichi Shinohara, Japanese head coach and a world champion in 1999, was shattered by the team's performance.
"It is very disappointing that the Japanese mens team is ending the competition with no gold medals. I take responsibility.
"I wonder if the athletes really had the determination to win gold. I think they lacked this attitude. They may have their excuses but the result is everything," said Shinohara.
"Hopefully by the next Olympic Games in 2012, you will see changes. I need to train the athletes so that they are mentally stronger.
"It does not mean anything if you win against Japanese athletes. International competition is what matters. We need to focus on bouts against non-Japanese athletes."
France's Teddy Riner went on to retain his title in the division, beating Cuba's Oscar Bryson for gold. Uzbekistan's Abdullo Tangriev and Lithuania's Marius Paskevicius both took bronze medals.
In the men's -100kg category, Kazakhstan's Maxim Rakov took gold by scoring an ippon success over Dutchman Henk Grol with Japan at least picking up a bronze consolation through Takamasa Anai.
Japan's Maki Tsukada picked up a bronze in the women's +78kg division with the title going to Olympic champion Tong Wen of China who beat Karina Bryant of Britain in the final by ippon.
Tong had defeated Tsukada in the quarter-finals.
"I did my best to get the medal," said the Japanese girl. "When Tomoko Fukumi (-48kg) won gold on the first day, I was really happy for her. We went to the same high school.
"That made me want to win a medal myself, but unfortunately I lost to Tong. Next year the world championship will be in Japan and I am determined to get my revenge."
Tong said her next target was to win the Asian Games title in 2010 on home territory in Guangzhou.
"I think I performed very well throughout the whole competition. I have achieved a lot in the sport, but my goal is to prove it each time and to keep progressing, to become better and better," she said.
"The power is the beauty of judo. Hopefully the Chinese will be inspired by the success and I hope Chinese judo grows. I hope to perform at the Asian Games in Guangzhou and win a gold medal."
