On its premiere weekend the film, in which the main character has chilling premonitions, raked in 28.3 million dollars, topping Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," which opened a week earlier, Exhibitor Relations said.
Tarantino's flick, which stars Brad Pitt leading Jewish US soldiers in World War II on a hunt for Nazis, earned 20 million dollars for total earnings so far of 73.7 million.
On its first week out, "Halloween 2" premiered in third place earning 17.4 million dollars.
Sci-fi film "District 9," about an extraterrestrial race living on earth, came in fourth place with 10.7 million dollars, trailed by action flick "GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra" with eight million.
Rounding out the big earners in sixth place was "Julie and Julia," with Meryl Streep (7.4 million dollars), "The Time Traveler's Wife" (6.7 million), the comedy "Shorts" (4.9 million), "Taking Woodstock" (3.7 million) and "G-Force" (2.8 million).
