Flixster's "Movies" aims to connect film fans
LOS ANGELES - Film website Flixster launched a new version of its iPhone application "Movies" this week, highlighting how technology and the Web are bringing Hollywood directly to fans and bypassing traditional information outlets like newspapers. The transition has wreaked havoc on the newspaper industry which has seen advertising pages plummet as movie studios shift their marketing efforts to the Web, but for social networking websites like Flixster, the change is boosting their users.
U.S. unveils new rules on border searches of laptops
WASHINGTON - The Obama administration unveiled new rules on Thursday for searching computers and other electronic devices when people enter the United States, attempting to address concerns about violating privacy and constitutional rights. Effective Friday, Microsoft will drop the price of the Xbox 360 Elite to $299.99 in the United States, just days after Sony Corp <6758.T> cut the rival PlayStation 3 to $299 from $399.
French official to talk iPhone troubles with Apple
PARIS - A senior executive from Apple Inc <AAPL.O> will meet France's consumer affairs minister on Friday to discuss a number of incidents in which screens on some of its popular iPhones were reported to have shattered for no obvious reason. French newspapers have reported several cases in which consumers described problems with the popular devices, which have sold by the million and helped Apple defy the global recession.
Time Warner Cable, Verizon to test TV on the Web
NEW YORK - Two more U.S. pay-TV providers, Time Warner Cable Inc and Verizon Communications Inc, plan to test systems to offer shows on the Web to paying customers in a bid to protect their subscription revenue. Time Warner Cable and Verizon separately announced their plans on Thursday and will follow Comcast Corp, the largest U.S. cable operator, which said in July it would test a Web TV service with some of its customers.
Facebook tightens safeguards after Canada talks
TORONTO - Facebook agreed on Thursday to give its worldwide users better protection over their personal information as the result of negotiations with Canada's privacy commissioner. China Unicom in 3-year deal for Apple's iPhone
BEIJING/HONG KONG - Apple's iPhone will go on sale later this year in China, the world's largest mobile market, but its partner China Unicom <0762.HK> may find selling the phone carries its own burdens. China's No. 2 mobile carrier is looking at the popular iPhone as a new gateway to profit, after posting a better-than-expected 45 percent fall in first-half profit on Friday.
