While airlines are mounting extra flights to Pattaya’s U—Tapao International Airport, the flights returning to Singapore are not full. Travellers had been told they could leave Thailand via U—Tapao Airport, but were in for a shock when they arrived there after a two—hour bus journey. "The airport itself was obviously in chaos. A lot of people were there. It’s a small airport but overall they did a good job over there, they were rushing themselves (to) get things organized," said one such traveller. Another said: "Once the airports were shut, there was no choice but wait and see how the situation develops. (We) have to see which airport is open and fly out from there." For now, airlines like SilkAir are planning more rescue flights out of Phuket and Chiang Mai on Sunday. AirAsia is also mounting a third flight from U—Tapao to Kuala Lumpur via Singapore. "We also know that some of the passengers have not made it to the airport yet because of the journey, and we hope tonight, more passengers will join the flight because we’re not too sure what’s going to happen tomorrow,” said the CEO of Jetstar Asia, Chong Phit Lian. Jetstar Asia says its planes have been waiting as long as three hours at U—Tapao for passengers and will likely do the same for its third rescue flight.
