Police kill hostage-taking knifeman in Chinese supermarket: state media
AFP - 2 hours 1 minute ago
BEIJING (AFP) - - Police on Saturday killed a man who was keeping a nurse hostage after stabbing three customers at a branch of supermarket giant Carrefour in China, state media reported.
"After several failed attempts at negotiation, officers opened fire and killed the hostage-taker," the China News Service said.
The man was reportedly hacking at shoppers in one of the French retailer's outlets in the southwestern city of Kunming, a police source reportedly told the agency.
The injured shoppers were taken to hospital where one was described as being in a critical condition, the report said.
Police said the man barricaded himself into an office after having taken a hostage. He released that captive but then took a female nurse who had been sent into the store to treat the injured.
"This is clearly an isolated incident with no link to anything else but we are still lacking many key details," Eric Legros, the president of Carrefour China, told AFP.
The chain was the focus of demonstrations in China in April protesting France's position on Tibet following a disrupted Olympic flame procession through Paris.
Rallies have taken place on several occasions in front of Carrefour supermarkets in China.
The firm has had a presence in China for more than 10 years, with a current portfolio of 122 supermarkets and 280 discount hardware stores attracting a total of two million customers a day.
China is a priority market for Carrefour, which says it is planning between 20 and 25 new stores there a year.
