Australia mourns 'genius' Sydney Opera House designer
AFP - 2 hours 39 minutes ago
SYDNEY (AFP) - - Australia Sunday mourned the death of Danish architect Joern Utzon, who designed Sydney's iconic, sail-shaped Opera House but never saw his building completed.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd led the tributes to Utzon, who died in Copenhagen aged 90 leaving as his legacy one of the world's most famous structures. Rudd said Utzon's vision had brought pride to all Australians.
"Joern Utzon was a visionary architect whose legacy includes one of the world's most spectacular and inspiring buildings, the Sydney Opera House," he said in a statement.
"Standing proudly on the edge of Sydney Harbour the Opera House is one of the most internationally recognised symbols of our nation."
Utzon won a 1956 competition to design an opera house for Sydney and began work the following year on a distinctive design which featured white 'sails' pointing out towards the harbour.
However he quit the project in 1966 following a storm of controversy over budget blow-outs and his artistic vision, and never returned to see his building, which was last year declared a World Heritage site, completed.
New South Wales state premier Nathan Rees said Australia was indebted to Utzon for the "architectural masterpiece."
"We pay tribute to a visionary architect whose design for the Sydney Opera House -- an architectural masterpiece -- has come to symbolise the spirit of our great nation around the world," he said.
The Opera House Trust, which maintains and operates the building, described Utzon as "an architectural and creative genius who gave Australia and the world a great gift."
"Sydney Opera House is core to our national cultural identity and a source of great pride to all Australians," trust chairman Kim Williams said.
"It has become the most globally recognised symbol of our country."
The lights on the famous building will be dimmed on Sunday night in memory of Utzon while the flags on Sydney's nearby Harbour Bridge will fly at half-mast on Monday in tribute.
