Britney Spears to have cameo in "Glee"
LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears is set to play a cameo role in an episode of TV musical comedy "Glee" that will be devoted to the pop star's music, the show's creator Ryan Murphy said on Tuesday. But the episode in the upcoming second season of the hit television show will not poke fun at the former pop princess and her meltdown three years ago, Murphy said.
'Spider-Man' musical set to open on Broadway
NEW YORK - The long-awaited Spider-Man musical with music by U2 members Bono and The Edge, will open on Broadway in December, the show's producers said on Tuesday, after being caught in financial problems. "Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark," which has been in the making for several years and was originally due to open earlier this year, will begin preview performances on November 14 with opening night set for December 21, the show's producer Michael Cohl said in a statement.
Over-40 actresses dominate September magazine covers
NEW YORK - When the September issues of fashion magazines -- typically their biggest of the year, ad-wise -- hit newsstands this month, the three most prestigious ones will feature actresses in their 40s on the cover. Vogue has booked Halle Berry, who turns 44 on Saturday; Harper's Bazaar will have 41-year-old Jennifer Aniston, promoting "The Switch"; and Elle has landed 42-year-old Julia Roberts, promoting her new film, "Eat Pray Love."
Witherspoon moving from June Carter to Peggy Lee
LOS ANGELES - Reese Witherspoon is working her way through the classic American songbook. The actress, who won an Oscar in 2005 for portraying June Carter in "Walk the Line," is pulling together an untitled biopic about Peggy Lee with writer-director Nora Ephron, reports Variety. Though Witherspoon is still negotiating to star, she is producing the Fox 2000 project with Marc Platt.
Elvis' granddaughter eyes "Mad Max" role
LOS ANGELES - Riley Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley, is in talks to nab a role in the fourth installment of the "Mad Max" movies, "Fury Road." The franchises' filmmaker George Miller is back in the writer-director seat. He's also producing with Doug Mitchell.
Ailing studio MGM facing bankruptcy next month
LOS ANGELES - Things are going so badly with MGM's restructuring review that a forced bankruptcy is a real possibility by September 15. Then again, lenders don't want to lose control of the studio's lucrative James Bond movie rights. So one of them could still dig deeper to provide enough new equity capital to make a voluntary restructuring feasible. Or if that option fails, the Century City studio could obtain a seventh extension of its debt forbearance agreement with its 100-plus lenders.
Judge unsticks "Bruno" Velcro lawsuit
LOS ANGELES - Sacha Baron Cohen has escaped yet another lawsuit. A federal judge on Monday dismissed a copyright claim brought by a writer who claimed that a scene in last year's "Bruno" was too similar to one in his original script called "Himbos."
Portia de Rossi aims to change name to DeGeneres
LOS ANGELES - Comedian Ellen DeGeneres' spouse Portia de Rossi has filed a legal request to change her name to "Portia Lee James DeGeneres," according to a court document. The request was filed on August 6 in Los Angeles, but the document, which was posted on the Internet by E! Online, shows that de Rossi signed it in late March.
Captain Underpants' creator returns with more poopypants
CANBERRA - As a superhero Captain Underpants may lack muscles but he's proven to have the power to get children reading with his creator, Dav Pilkey, hoping four new books with the same potty humor will nab more young readers. Pilkey, 44, an author and artist based near Seattle, said he came up with the idea of Captain Underpants while at school where he was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder and spent long periods in the hallway on his own, drawing and making up stories.
Charlie Sheen's wife feared for life during assault
LOS ANGELES - Brooke Mueller, the wife of actor Charlie Sheen, feared for her life as the Hollywood star pinned her to their bed and put a knife to her throat during a Christmas Day argument last year, according to a newly released police report. Last week, Sheen pleaded guilty to assaulting Mueller during the argument in Aspen, Colorado, and he was ordered to serve 30 days in drug and alcohol rehabilitation in California. The police report details the extent to which Mueller was hurt and tells how Sheen, star of hit sitcom "Two and a Half Men," reacted when being questioned by police.
