WELLINGTON, New Zealand – The first New Zealand soldier to die in combat in a decade was buried Wednesday _ a week after he was killed in an ambush during a patrol in Afghanistan.
More than a thousand mourners paid their respects to Lt. Tim O'Donnell, 28, at a service at Linton Army Base, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of the capital, Wellington.
Governor general Anand Satyanand, Prime Minister John Key and defense force chief Lt. Gen. Jerry Mateparae all spoke during the service. Cpl. Matthew Ball and Private Allister Baker, both wounded in the same attack, also attended their commander's funeral.
The trio's Humvee struck a roadside bomb during a routine patrol in Bamiyan province, an area that has seen few insurgent attacks in the seven years New Zealand troops have been posted there.
"Families have lost a son, a brother, a comrade, a good mate," Prime Minister John Key said during the service. "New Zealand has lost a fine young leader."
O'Donnell was the youngest officer to be awarded a Distinguished Service Decoration _ for valor in East Timor _ where he used his troops to help save the lives of civilians caught in a militia action.
He is the first New Zealand soldier to die in combat since 2000, when a soldier was killed in a militia ambush in East Timor.
Flags flew at half-staff on all government and public buildings to mark the funeral.
New Zealand's 140-strong provincial reconstruction team of troops in Bamiyan had been expected to end their seven-year deployment in September. But Key said in May the posting will continue for another year, then start reducing as civilian specialists are introduced.
New Zealand also has 40 Special Air Service elite combat troops in Afghanistan. Their tour of duty ends in March 2011.
