ShareThis May 16, 2010 4:04 p.m. EST Topics: disaster and accident, pollution, economy, business and finance, United States David Goodhue - AHN News Reporter Miami, FL, United States (AHN) - British Petroleum announced Sunday that it was successful in inserting a 5-foot long pipe into the damaged riser that has been gushing oil for three and a half weeks in the Gulf of Mexico. The pipe is four inches in diameter, and is being placed in the damaged riser, which is 21 inches in diameter. The company hopes the new pipe can collect much of the oil before it does any more damage to life in and around the Gulf. The pipe will be connected to a new 5,000-foot riser, and the oil hopefully can be transferred up to the drillship, the Transocean Discoverer Enterprise, according to a BP statement. Company and government officials hope BP will have more success with this latest attempt to stop the oil flow. Last week, the company placed a large steel dome over the leak site, but frozen gas hydrates stopped the oil from flowing. An attempt to insert the tube failed Saturday night, when a remote-controlled submarine accidentally got tangled in the pipe’s surface line, according to the Washington Post. The new tube has can inject methanol to prevent gas hydrates from forming, according to BP, and the new riser will be heated with sea water to promote the oil’s upward flow.
