Robin Hood hits bull's-eye at worldwide box office
LOS ANGELES - "Robin Hood" took the lead at the worldwide box office in its first weekend of release, but the costly Russell Crowe saga failed to replace "Iron Man 2" as the top choice in North America, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday. Crowe's fifth collaboration with director Ridley Scott earned $111.1 million from 57 markets, led by a relatively modest $37.1 million in the United States and Canada, said Universal Pictures, a unit of General Electric Co.
Father-son film in war-torn Chad lights up Cannes
CANNES, France - The moving story of a father's search for a son who is drafted to fight against advancing rebel forces in Chad has won admirers at the Cannes film festival, where it is in the main competition. Underlining how the annual cinema showcase champions low-budget productions from around the world as well as Hollywood heavyweights, "A Screaming Man" has its world premiere on Sunday a day after Woody Allen was given the same honor.
Tavernier brings "16th century thriller" to Cannes
CANNES, France - Veteran French director Bertrand Tavernier constructs a "16th century thriller" in "La Princesse de Montpensier," a tale of passion, betrayal and vengeance showing at the Cannes film festival. The picture, based on an austere novella by the 17th century writer Madame de Lafayette, tells the story of a young noblewoman who is forced to renounce the man she loves as a girl when she is married off by her family for political reasons.
Woody Allen ushers "Tall Dark Stranger" into Cannes
CANNES, France - For anyone thinking age has its benefits -- wisdom, maturity, etc. -- veteran film director Woody Allen has a message: you're wrong. The Oscar winner's "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" -- a witty tale of marriage gone awry -- features one particular romance that makes audiences look closely at aging.
Hudson to play Winnie Mandela amid legal threats
CANNES, France - Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is to star in a biopic of former South African President Nelson Mandela's ex-wife Winnie, whose lawyers have already contacted the film makers threatening to block it. "Winnie," which also features Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela and is based on a book by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob, starts shooting in South Africa on May 31 and could be ready for theatres by spring next year.
British director Leigh's "Another Year" at Cannes
CANNES, France - A happy couple with unhappy friends form the basis of "Another Year," British director Mike Leigh's characteristically wry exploration of flawed humanity showing at the Cannes film festival. Tom and his wife Gerri, played by Leigh regulars Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen have been together for 40 years, raising their son Joe, working on their garden and playing occasional host to friends like Gerri's scatty colleague Mary.
Rolling Stones revisit their days in "Exile"
NEW YORK - The Rolling Stones are revisiting their creative heights by releasing one of their greatest albums with 10 extra tracks, and reminiscing about their chaotic days in a grainy new documentary. The British rockers have remastered "Exile on Main Street," a 1972 double album that boasts such concert favorites as "Tumbling Dice" and "Rocks Off." It comes out on Tuesday on the United States, and a day earlier everywhere else.
NBC cancels long-running crime show "Law & Order"
LOS ANGELES - The verdict is in. TV network NBC announced on Friday it is canceling crime drama "Law & Order" after 20 seasons. With its revolving regular cast and its guest celebrities, New York-based "Law & Order" drew its inspiration from real crimes and events, giving it a "ripped from the headlines" appeal.
Russell Crowe snaps over "Irish" Robin Hood accent
LONDON - Actor Russell Crowe stormed out of a BBC radio interview after suggestions that he had made the quintessentially British legend Robin Hood sound Irish in his latest movie. New Zealand-born Crowe, who was raised in Australia, has been the target of criticism in the British media for his accent in the "Robin Hood" action adventure movie which opened this week with its world premiere held at the Cannes film festival.
Fund-raising sites offer new options to musicians
NASHVILLE - As record labels embrace new platforms to create direct-to-fan releases, they're changing how the industry thinks of websites usually associated with unsigned or emerging artists. Two recent examples stand out. U.K.-based Atlantic Records artist Natty is using Pledge Music to finance the release of an EP, while indie Kill Rock Stars is using Kickstarter.com to raise funds for the release of a vinyl boxed set featuring the collected works of Swiss female post-punk group Kleenex.
