Apple's iPhone replaces Blackberry for some bankers
SINGAPORE/HONG KONG - British bank Standard Chartered is replacing the Blackberry, currently its standard corporate communication device, with the iPhone, a move that could eventually result in thousands of its bankers switching to the Apple <AAPL.O> device for business communication on the go. Standard Chartered <STAN.L><2888.HK> bankers in Asia told Reuters that the London-based lender was giving its corporate Blackberry users the option of switching to the iPhone, with the company agreeing to continue to pay monthly billing for business-related telephone and data services.
China's Web "firewall" should be WTO issue: EU's Kroes
SHANGHAI - China's Internet "firewall" is a trade barrier and needs to be tackled within the framework of the World Trade Organization, Neelie Kroes, vice-president of the European Commission, told reporters in Shanghai on Monday. Dutch-born Kroes, who is also in charge of Europe's digital agenda, said the firewall was a trade barrier as long as it blocked communication for Internet users, preventing the free flow of information.
LG Display banks on e-reader growth
SEOUL -The global electronic book market will grow almost 80 percent this year, aided by Apple's <AAPL.O> iPad, but devices with limited multimedia functions will remain a mainstream segment thanks to consumers seeking a serious reading experience, LG Display said on Monday. Shipments of electronic paper displays jumped five-fold last year to 5 million units, spurred by strong sales of e-readers such as Amazon's Kindle and Sony's <6758.T> Sony Reader, according to DisplaySearch.
"I do" goes high-tech with Japan robot priest
TOKYO - The groom looked dashing, his bride resplendent in white, but all eyes in this Japanese wedding were on the priest, a four-foot tall robot with colorful, flashing eyes called i-Fairy. The robot is usually used in museum and exhibitions to direct visitors, but with the help of a flower headpiece, and a new programme, it pronounced Satoko Inoue and Tomohiro Shibata man and wife at a Sunday ceremony.
Google says mistakenly got wireless data
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> said its fleet of cars responsible for photographing streets around the world have for several years accidentally collected personal information -- which a security expert said could include email messages and passwords -- sent by consumers over wireless networks. The company said on Friday that it is currently reaching out to regulators in the relevant countries, which include the United States, Germany, France, Brazil and Hong Kong in China, about how to dispose of the data, which Google said it never used.
Beer, betrayal, a lost iPhone in Apple device tale
SAN FRANCISCO - Fearing "huge" losses in sales after pictures leaked of its fourth-generation iPhone, Apple Inc <AAPL.O> convinced police to launch a felony investigation and Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs contacted the offending Web site himself to try and recover the gadget. A California court unsealed a search warrant on Friday in the case of the lost or stolen prototype 4G iPhone whose inner workings ended up on popular gadget site Gizmodo -- weaving a bizarre tale of beer gardens, paranoid lawyers and emails to the Apple chieftain.
Google to stop selling smartphone online
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc is closing its 4-month-old online cell phone store, abandoning an ambitious plan by the Web search leader to redefine wireless retailing. Google said on Friday it will stop selling its Nexus One smartphone through its online Web store and will instead work with partners to sell the device through retail outlets.
Ruling could have chilling effect on P2P services
LOS ANGELES/DENVER file sharing. But its practical importance in squelching illegal downloading is much murkier. New York-based LimeWire claims to be "the world's most popular peer-to-peer file sharing program," and, if the major labels succeed in obtaining an injunction to disable the service, millions of users will see their spigot of free songs suddenly shut off.
Free games lure new players including women, elderly
RALEIGH, North Carolina - The video game industry has weathered the economic slowdown better than most industries, but there could be a reason -- free games with new figures showing up to a third of gamers don't pay to play. More people are getting into gaming through free titles like Zynga's "Treasure Isle" played online through social networking sites like Facebook, downloading free games like ngmoco's "Godfinger" on mobile devices like iPhone and iPad, or sitting on a friend's couch to play multiplayer maps with titles like Activision Blizzard's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2."
Video game sales plunge in April: NPD
SAN FRANCISCO - Sales of video game hardware and software plunged 26 percent in April, industry tracker NPD said on Thursday, one of the largest declines over the past decade. The research group said sales in the United States, the world's largest market, fell to $766.2 million.
