NATO soldier killed in Afghanistan
AFP - Friday, December 26
KABUL (AFP) - - A soldier with the NATO-led military contingent in Afghanistan was killed in the south of the insurgency-hit country, the force said Thursday.
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) did not provide the nationality of the soldier killed on Wednesday or explain how he had died.
"We are saddened by this brave serviceman's death, and our deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones, especially during this holiday season," ISAF spokesman Captain Mark Windsor said in a statement.
ISAF had already announced that another trooper was killed on Wednesday in eastern Afghanistan in an insurgent attack.
About 70,000 international soldiers are deployed in Afghanistan to help the fledgling government fight an insurgency led by the extremist Taliban, who were in government between 1996 and 2001.
Around 290 foreign soldiers fighting in Afghanistan have lost their lives this year, the most violent of an insurgency that began after a US-led invasion toppled the Taliban regime in late 2001.
Most of the soldiers have been killed in insurgent attacks but the tally, compiled by the icasualties.org website that tracks casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq, includes those who die in accidents and from natural causes.
