Channel NewsAsia - Friday, December 26 Taiwanese evergreen songstress, Fong Fei Fei, shares on how singing has become a major part of her life. F: Dear fans, do you still remember me? I've really missed you guys. I believe that you have been missed very much too; in fact, I was just pondering before this interview. How do you prefer fans to address you, given your current status in the industry? The evergreen artiste who has mesmerized fans young and old? F: Just be casual. People usually address me as Fong Jie (Sister Fong). It is OK to call me Fei Fei too. It's been two over years since your last visit to Singapore. We are all eager to find out what you have been up to and if this visit has given you any new insight or experience? F: My last visit was more than two and a half years ago. Basically, Singapore is pretty much how I remember her to be, except for the addition of more vibrant elements such as Singapore Flyer, and hosting for the F1 night race. So in your upcoming concert in Singapore, late this month, what should fans be expecting to see and are there any surprises? F: It will be like a carnival; casual and lively. The theme is set to be "Rainbow' and songs from all these years relating to it will be performed throughout the concert. As for the special guest, I'll have to keep you anticipating for now. Most of your songs are well-known from streets to alleys and down different generations. What exactly is the message you wish to bring across to your audience? F: In fact the audiences are probably here to listen to the familiar songs from the older days to reminisce on the past. It is very heart-warming. Similarly, singing to me has become something irreplaceable; almost like an urge that flows in my blood. Through singing, I'm able to lead life without regret. And through singing, I'm able to connect with my fans. As long as there is a chance to perform on stage, I'll definitely go for it. So how to you maintain yourself in such good shape throughout these 40 years, as compare the younger artistes who fall out easily? F: It's all about practice, and I believe my practice is far tougher than any youngsters have been through. To keep in shape, including my vocals, regular running and strict diet is a must. I have been watching what I eat closely for the past 10 years. No spicy or fried food, no chili, pepper and chilly food; all has become a habit for me now. To watch my weight, I also have to be disciplined enough to only eat what I want in the day, and refrain from meat at night. All these little "principles" help to keep me in shape to perform on stage, at any time, in my tip top condition. Beside your condition to perform, you also maintain a very good public image. One of your nicknames includes "Queen of Hats", and some reports go to claim that you own over 700 hats. So how exactly do you manage them? F: I'm very hard working in the sense that almost every hat of mine has a photographic record. The photos are then archived into my database by colour and season. It is thus easier for me to find what I want. I've been wearing a hat since the age of five; I started wearing hats on stage to save me the hassle of doing my hair. Fans like what they saw and it became a trademark of mine. As my collection continues to increase, it might really break the 700 count (currently the collection has yet to reach that number).
