A month after an explosion tore through a BP-leased drilling platform, spokesman Mark Proegler said a tube was now siphoning away 5,000 barrels -- or 210,000 gallons -- of the oil spilling from the ruptured well. But the British energy giant had accepted earlier estimates that put the total daily leakage at 5,000 barrels, and Proegler acknowledged it was probably more than that. "Now that we are collecting 5,000 barrels a day, it might be a little more than that," he told AFP. Independent experts have warned the flow from the Deepwater Horizon, crippled and sunk by the April 20 explosion, could be at least 10 times higher. As the slick enters a powerful ocean current sweeping it towards Florida and Cuba, BP is readying what has been dubbed a "top kill" to try to seal the leak for good starting as early as Sunday and possibly stretching into next week. But for Louisiana's fragile wetlands the measure may come too late. "The day that we have all been fearing is upon us today," Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said Wednesday as he noted that "heavy oil" has entered the marshlands, home to endangered plant and animal life. In some spots, a thick blanket of oil hung at the bottom of the marsh. Proegler stressed the "top kill" was "certainly not" the company's last attempt to stop the leak. "All the analysis and the experts are saying that is probably the best option to pursue first," he said, adding the company was also capturing 15 million cubic feet of natural gas a day. "The focus has always been on several fronts: to stop the oil flow and minimize the impact on the shore and the economy." Officials say 600 animal species threatened by oil spill He said BP needed to better understand the condition of the blowout preventer, a large valve that failed to cap the well as it is designed to do in an emergency, before implementing containment options. The slick is now being swept toward Florida's tourist beaches and fragile coral reefs by the powerful Loop Current, that could wash oil ashore within days, and carry it up the US East Coast and even into the Gulf Stream. Oil in the current could cause massive damage to the rich marine wildlife that rides the ocean super-highway from spawning zones to areas where they mature, experts warned. Oil threatens French-speaking Cajuns, native Choctaw US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar raised expectations about the chances of success for finally sealing the leak from the well just 50 miles (80 kilometers) off Louisiana. "Our hope is what they call the dynamic kill of this well will happen on Sunday. And that it will be killed. Everything is being done to make sure that happens," Salazar told CNN. "Our priority is to stop the well from leaking because that's where the cancer is and we need to get that stopped," he said. But Salazar cautioned that the method, which has never been tried at these depths -- nearly a mile (1,500 meters) below the surface -- was "not risk-free." If the pressure on the well is insufficient, BP officials are considering combining that operation with a "junk shot," where golf balls, rubber tire parts, plastic and other debris would be injected under pressure into the blowout preventer to clog it up. Among the other options being considered is placing another valve on top of the failed blowout preventer. Amid rising concerns that the chemical dispersants used by BP may also be endangering marine life, US officials have given the firm a 24-hour deadline to choose a less toxic chemical to break up the slick, The Washington Post said. "This is a large amount of dispersants being used, larger amounts than have ever been used, on a pipe that continues to leak oil and that BP is still trying to cap," an official from the Environmental Protection Agency said. BP told to switch to less toxic dispersant in oil spill US officials only approved the use of subsea dispersants on Friday, despite concerns from environmental groups about their toxicity. Meanwhile, demonstrators from environmental group Greenpeace scaled BP's London headquarters to protest the spill. About eight campaigners hoisted an oil-soaked flag above the entrance of the building bearing BP's logo and the words "British Polluters."
