Miami, FL, United States (AHN) - In a move that seems to confirm fears of environmental experts, the Environmental Protection Agency is ordering BP to switch to a less toxic dispersant. The oil company trying to clean up a continuous massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will have reportedly 72 hours to make the switch.

Nearly 700,000 gallons of the substance has already been used. Some 600,000 gallons of the chemical has been dumped on the water's surface while another 55,000 have been used underwater at the leaking well head. To date it is the largest use of chemicals to break up an oil spill in United State's waters to date.

Corexit, the chemical currently being used, was banned in Britain over a decade ago.

With only three rounds of testing by BP, federal officials approved the use of underwater dispersants late last week. However, environmentalists and some lawmakers are worried about what future potential dangers may arise as a result of fast tracking the chemicals.

On Monday, Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA) sent a letter to EPA administrator Lisa P. Jackson highlighting his fears, especially since Britain has outlawed the substance BP is deluging the Gulf of Mexico with.

He said, "The release of hundreds of thousands of gallons of chemicals into the Gulf of Mexico could be an unprecedented, large and aggressive experiment on our oceans, and requires careful oversight by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other appropriate federal agencies."

It remains unknown what chemical alternatives BP is going to submit to the agency for review or if they would choose instead to rely less heavily on chemical treatment of the oil spill.

But in published reports Thursday, a company that makes a dispersant called Dispersit SPC 1000 said it had received a large order from BP and would increase its production to 20,000 gallons a day in the next few days, and eventually to as much as 60,000 gallons a day.

Dispersants are typically used to move oil off the surface of the ocean to protect marine life and to prevent large amounts of surface oil from moving onshore. The way BP is using it in this incident and why the EPA is allowing them to use it in open water has left many scientists pondering why the plan was approved.

News of the dispersant issue and its fears comes on the same day huge swaths of Louisiana marshland became inundated with oil from the Deepwater Horizon rig. Thursday was also the day BP execs conceded that their estimates in the oil leaking and spill were wrong.

"This is serious — this is the heavy oil that everyone has been fearing. It is here now," Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said. His comments were precipitated by the presence of thick oil, rather the light sheen that had already reached coastlines along the Gulf Coast. Its arrival could signal the worst-case scenario many feared.

The region's marshlands are home to rare birds, mammals and a wide variety of marine life.

Company spokesman Mark Proegler said about 5,000 barrels of oil a day are being funneled by a mile-long tube inserted into the leaking pipeline last weekend. Initially it said 5,000 barrels a day was flowing from the burst oil well.

"We said from the beginning, our experts have been saying there really is no reliable way to estimate the flow from the riser," Proegler said.

His comments come two days after Sen. Ben Nelson requested all video records of oil gushing from the broken pipe and wellhead. The footage, shown around the world, revealed a constant torrent of oil gushing from the well head. Calculations by various scientists estimate up to 70,000 barrels a day could be spilling into the gulf since the Deepwater Horizon exploded 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana on April 20 and sank two days later.
