Google premieres Web television gamble
SAN FRANCISCO - Web search king Google Inc <GOOG.O> showed off on Thursday a risky attempt to marry the Web to television and reach the $70 billion TV advertising market, chasing a dream that has eluded even archrival Apple Inc. Developers at a conference applauded "Google TV;" and a slew of tech industry titans, including microchip maker Intel Corp <INTC.O> and TV maker Sony Corp <6758.T>, sent their chief executives to announce that they had joined the project and that TV sets would be ready in time for Christmas buying.
Corrected: Annoyed by cellphones? Scientists explain why
NEW YORK - Ever wonder why overhearing a cellphone conversation is so annoying? American researchers think they have found the answer. Whether it is the office, on a train or in a car, only half of the conversation is overheard which drains more attention and concentration than when overhearing two people talking, according to scientists at Cornell University.
Samsung unit sees firm smartphone market
KIHEUNG, South Korea - Global shipments of smartphones may grow 50 percent this year and drive explosive expansion in high-end OLED display sales over the next five years, a Samsung Mobile Display executive said on Thursday. "Demand for high-end displays is very strong and we may continue to fail to meet all customer requirements, even after expanding capacity by seven-fold, until next year," Lee Woo-jong, vice president of marketing at Samsung Mobile Display, told the Reuters Global Technology Summit.
After Facebook, Pakistan shuts down YouTube
ISLAMABAD directed Internet service providers to block access to social network site Facebook indefinitely on Wednesday because of an online competition to draw the Prophet Mohammad.
Paris police ban mass "Facebook aperitif" party
PARIS - A mass cocktail party organized over the internet and planned to take place in Paris this Sunday cannot go ahead due to an existing ban on drinking alcohol in the Champ de Mars area, police said on Thursday. Last week, a man fell to his death after taking part in a cocktail evening which was set up over online social network Facebook and drew almost 10,000 revelers. The death was the first on record as a result of so-called "Facebook aperitifs."
U.S. fails to describe wireless industry as competitive
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission for the first time since 2002 did not describe the wireless industry as having "effective competition," a situation one senior regulator blamed on consolidation. The key omission was in an annual report on the state of competition in the wireless industry. The FCC on Thursday released the report, which covers 2008 and a portion of 2009.
HP plans Web-connected printers without PCs
SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> is preparing a broad push to make it easier to print images and information from the Internet, building an iPhone-style apps market in the process, the head of the company's imaging group said on Wednesday. HP late last year introduced its first Web-connected home printer, which has a touch screen, which can download applications so that a user could more easily print out for example, a daily crossword puzzle or children's coloring page without using a separate computer.
Asian moms hooked on Internet for children, selves: study
SINGAPORE - The Internet is a lifeline for Asian mothers, with a survey finding two-thirds use it to shop for themselves and their children and an even bigger number going online to research purchases and talk about them. The study, by Microsoft Advertising and Starcom MediaVest Group, showed that mothers ultimately hold the purse-strings in the region, influencing purchasing decisions ranging from household staples to big-ticket items such as cars.
Google beats Microsoft in smartphones, catching Apple
PARIS - Google <GOOG.O> has overtaken Microsoft <MSFT.O> in the battle over the software that runs mobile phones and is challenging Apple for share of the fast growing smartphone market. Google's Android was the fourth most popular operating system on smartphones sold in the first quarter, research firm Gartner said on Wednesday, putting the company in a good position as handsets look set to surpass computers for browsing the Web.
Lawmakers ask FTC to look into Google Wi-Fi data
WASHINGTON - Two lawmakers who co-chair the House Privacy Caucus asked the Federal Trade Commission if Google <GOOG.O> broke the law in collecting WiFi and other Internet data while taking photographs for its Street View product. Reps. Joe Barton, a Republican, and Edward Markey, a Democrat, wrote to the FTC chairman to ask if the agency was looking into the data collection, which Google has said was "a mistake."
