WASHINGTON (AFP) - – Mexican President Felipe Calderon urged the US government to repair an outmoded immigration system and do more to ensure that illegal guns do not flow across the countries' shared border, in an address to the US Congress Thursday. On the second day of a two-day state visit, Calderon declared that "the time has come for the United States and Mexico to work together" on the contentious immigration issue -- one that for years has proved a diplomatic thorn in US-Mexican relations. "What we need today is to fix a broken and inefficient system," Calderon told lawmakers. The Mexican leader renewed his call for an overhaul of US immigration laws that would offer up to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States, many of them Mexicans, a path to US citizenship. "I am convinced that a comprehensive immigration reform is also crucial to securing our common border," he said. Even as he ramped up pressure on Congress to introduce immigration reform Calderon acknowledged that his own government is obliged to do more to stop people crossing the border, beginning with creating more jobs and improving the overall economic climate in Mexico. "We want to provide the Mexican people with the opportunities they are looking for. That is our goal. That is our mission as government, to transform Mexico into a land of opportunities, to provide to our people with jobs and opportunities to live in peace and to be happy," the Mexican president said. And for a second day, he strongly criticized a new Arizona law that has enraged Hispanics and stoked fears of racial profiling. "It introduces a terrible idea using racial profiling as a basis for law enforcement," he said. "I agree with the president (Barack Obama) who says the new law carries a great amount of risk with the core values that we all care about are breached," Calderon said. The Mexican leader and his wife late Wednesday were the guests of honor at a glittering White House state dinner, only the second of the Obama presidency. But the immigration issue continually has dogged the visit, and even briefly reared its head in awkward moment Wednesday, when first ladies Michelle Obama and Margarita Zavala were visiting an elementary school in a Washington suburb. A little girl raised her hand said "My mom says that Barack Obama is taking every body away that doesn't have papers." After Obama reassured her that the government was working to "fix that," the girl announced, "my mom doesn't have any papers." On Monday the US and Mexican governments issued a declaration on bolstering border enforcement, and Obama said they both bore responsibility to ensure their joint border was secured. But Obama also said that immigration reform would require "support from Republicans" -- a key ingredient, especially in a congressional election year, that has been absent on Capitol Hill thus far. Calderon faces immense domestic pressure to seek US immigration reform in the wake of the new law, which allows police to detain people suspected of being in the United States illegally. His country's shaky economy also is dependent on the vast sums of money wired each day from nationals living out of the country -- including those living illegally in the United States. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said her state's new immigration law, which enjoyed broad support in recent opinion polls, is necessary to help secure her state's porous border, one of the main entry points for illegal immigrants coming to the United States. Calderon in his remarks also urged US lawmakers to halt the flow of arms across his country's joint border with the United States into the hands of violent drug cartels. "There is one issue where Mexico needs your cooperation: stopping the flow of weapons and deadly arms across the border," he said. He warned thousands of weapons were ending up in the hands of the drug cartels fighting a bloody turf war for control of the lucrative drug trade. Calderon said some 70,000 weapons had been confiscated in three years, and "more than 80 percent of those ... came from the US." Calderon has declared war on the country's well-armed drug gangs, but spiraling drug violence has claimed the lives of nearly 23,000 people since the end of 2006.
