Now the Olympic resort just north of Vancouver is a temporary home to many. WHISTLER, Canada (AFP) - – Once upon a time Whistler was considered a last brief stop for many young Aussie travellers on their way back Down Under after taking time out to traverse the globe. Now the Olympic resort just north of Vancouver is a temporary home to many. Since 2006 Australians have been in the unique position of acquiring not one but two-year visas that many manage to renew upon expiration. Occasionally some, like John Teitzel, burst out of the Whistler "bubble" and stay on to successfully apply for Canadian citizenship. As well as injecting a crucial ingredient into the local economy, the Australian accent is the one that dominates. And whether on the mountain, in the local cafe or the official Olympic store, you can't help feeling that without the Aussies Whistler would somehow grind to a halt. "I can't imagine this place without Australians," G.D. Maxwell, a local writer and columnist for Pique magazine for the last 14 years, told AFP. "They are the spice in the stew." Bianca Bekkevold is one of an estimated 600 Aussies currently working in or around Whistler. She has been here for nearly two years and, despite being only 24, considers herself a veteran. Like many travellers she "heard about Whistler through word of mouth", and is already planning to apply for another visa. "Then I want to do my snowboard instructor (certificate) level one, get on the mountain every day, snowboard and have fun," said Bekkevold, who admits she needs two jobs to make ends meet. It might not be Aspen, the notoriously posh resort in Colorado, but local prices often mean that two jobs are necessary. David Cook, a 21-year-old from Perth who got his job through an organisation called OWH (Overseas Working Holidays), agreed: "We don't save any money, you just live off it. "The problem is there's always something to do." Fiona Famulak, a Scot who has set up home in Whistler and is now Chamber of Commerce president, said her Chamber's successful lobbying to have the visa extended has changed the face of the local economy. "Up until 2006 Australian workers were only given a one-year visa but we lobbied to have that extended to two years, and that is a bonus for both the employers and the employess," she told AFP. "The Australians have added another dynamic to the community here; they're fun, talented and hard-working. In fact Australia Day (January 26) is one of the biggest days in Whistler." When they're not helping drive the local economy, the Aussies like to party hard -- whether its snowboarding and skiing on the dozens of powder-packed runs or in one of the many bars and nightclubs dotted around the compact town. "For an Aussie who wants to see the snow, it's pretty much Whistler or nowhere," said Cook. But for Bekkevold it's hard to escape once you get in. "That's the thing about Whistler, it's like a bubble. Once you come here you get trapped." Trapped is not the term Teitzel would use. Ten years ago he came for the good times, stayed on, married a local and now works helping to maintain the Whistler resort's official website. "I feel kind of half-Canadian now," he admits. "There's so many Australians you just don't get homesick," said Cook. "It really is an Australian town in Canada." Another Australian, Dave Murray from Brisbane, took that suggestion a step further. "Not only is it Australia's premier ski resort, for us it's Australia's capital."
