Operators unite to challenge Apple's app store
BARCELONA - Twenty-four telecom operators have formed an alliance to build an open platform that will deliver applications to all mobile phone users in an effort to compete with Apple's <AAPL.O> successful apps store. The move is supported by three of the world's largest device makers -- LG Electronics <066570.KS>, Samsung <005930.KS> and Sony Ericsson <6758.T> <ERICb.ST> the telecoms industry body GSM Association said on Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Adobe pushes mobile video despite Apple stand-off
BARCELONA - Adobe <ADBE.O> announced advances to its popular Flash video player that promise to improve the experience of watching video on a mobile, and said it would support Google's <GOOG.O> Android phone platform. Adobe, whose Flash software delivers most video viewed online and made YouTube possible, also said it believed Apple <AAPL.O> would eventually bow to market pressure and include Flash on the iPhone and the new iPad tablet computer.
Samsung, Sony Ericsson roll out new smartphones
BARCELONA - Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> and Sony Ericsson <6758.T><ERICb.ST> unveiled their new top smartphone models on Sunday, both hoping to improve their positions in the more lucrative part of the phone market. Samsung, the world No 2 handset maker, unveiled its flagship smartphone model Wave -- using a new touch screen technology and the first phone to use its bada operating system.
Linux group LiMo growing, Adobe joins
BARCELONA - U.S. software firm Adobe and three other firms joined the wireless Linux group LiMo on Monday, underlying the growing role of the Linux computer operating system in cellphones. The market for software platforms on cellphones is led by Nokia's Symbian operating system, but it has lost much ground over the last year to Apple Inc and Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry.
Google, Apple pile pressure on phone world
HELSINKI/LONDON - At next week's mobile trade show in Barcelona you can find a program that measures how high you can throw a Nokia smartphone, an apt metaphor for Nokia's <NOK1V.HE> efforts to raise its game. But gravity might not favor the world's biggest maker of cellphones, as the focus of the $169 billion industry shifts to software and services, the "mindshare" that is lifting nimble competitors such as iPhone maker Apple <AAPL.O> and Google <GOOG.O>.
Toy makers see joy in tech, green, classic in 2010
NEW YORK - Toy makers from industry goliath Mattel Inc <MAT.O> to smaller names such as MEGA Brands <MB.TO> and Techno Source displayed their top playthings for 2010, which many bet will be a good year for toys. It was all work and no play for the Who's Who of the toy industry on Sunday as they gathered at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City for the opening of the 107th American International Toy Fair.
Omnifone signs music deal for Google's Android
BARCELONA - Omnifone, the digital music service provider, is to make its MusicStation offering available to all mobile handsets which carry Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android operating platform, it said on Monday. Omnifone, which already provides its service to the likes of British pay TV company BSkyB <BSY.L> and Vodafone <VOD.L>, said it would debut its service on the Google Nexus One and HTC <2498.TW> handsets at the Mobile World Congress industry event in Barcelona.
Good Tech wins global licensing deal with LG
BARCELONA - The world's No 3 cellphone maker LG Electronics <066570.KS> has signed a deal to license Good Technology's communications platform, helping it to strengthen service offerings on its phones. Good's platform -- integrating e-mail, messaging, social networking, and media sharing -- could help hardware manufacturer LG in a market shifting increasingly toward services and software.
Microsoft to announce new phone software: sources
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is set to announce new mobile phone software on Monday, according to sources close to the company, as it looks to wrestle back market share from Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone and Research in Motion Ltd's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry. The world's largest software company, which makes operating systems for phones made by HTC Corp <2498.TW>, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS>, Motorola Inc <MOT.N> and others, is hoping to regain momentum in the fast-growing sector after a lackluster update to its mobile software in October.
Google mulls stand-alone version of Buzz
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> said it may create a stand-alone version of its Buzz social networking product but won't separate Buzz from its Gmail service, a linkup that has spurred controversy over privacy. Google, the world's No.1 Internet search engine launched Buzz earlier this week in a bid to tap into the fast-growing social networking market dominated by companies like Facebook and Twitter.
