Icy glares and snowy stares? Relations aren't quite so frosty at the Winter Olympics on Valentine's Day -- but many athletes say it's medals that count, not making out. WHISTLER, Canada (AFP) - – Icy glares and snowy stares? Relations aren't quite so frosty at the Winter Olympics on Valentine's Day -- but many athletes say it's medals that count, not making out. When you're competing you have to put the passion in the freezer, explains Finnish ice hockey defenceman Janne Niskala, who has three dates in the coming days, but with Belarus, Germany and Sweden rather than his wife. "Just a phone message. No flowers," said the 28-year-old. "She knows I am busy and she wants a medal" rather than a Valentine. And, at least for the purposes of competition, there will be little love lost between Jeremy Barrett and girlfriend Amanda Evora. The American couple compete against each other in the figure skating pairs on Sunday, where Evora partners Mark Ladwig while Barrett links up with Caydee Denney. Swiss cross-country skier Christoph Eigenmann is another not focused on matters romantic right now as he prepares for Wednesday's sprint . "At the moment it's not important. I think I have to organise some flowers for back home. But probably the most important thing this year is the 17th, the individual sprint," says Eigenmann. Speed-skater Chad Hedrick has recruited his mother-in-law to keep his romantic end up and prove he is thinking of wife Lynsey. "It can't be a normal Valentine's Day for sure but I'll find a place to take my wife," says the 32-year-old from Texas. "My mother-in-law is getting me a Valentine's card" to give Lynsey - who can be in no doubt about the place she holds in Chad's heart as a picture of the couple on their wedding day dominates the athlete's website. Some participants can feel the "lurve" and concentrate at the same time on Olympic glory. Canadian lovebirds Lorne and Chris Hamblin don't have to let their Games plan spoil their 34th wedding anniversary, which fell Sunday as they prepared to take training as co-coaches of the Swiss men's curlers. Their partnership "hasn't created any conflicts we can't live with yet," says Lorne, pointing out that in 2002 they co-coached a Canadian team including sons David, Kevin and Doug to a world junior title. Meanwhile, even if thousands of miles separate competitors from their loved ones, modern technology can play Cupid these days. "I will send my girlfriend kisses on Skype maybe," said German speed-skater Samuel Schwarz. Alternatively, take the advice of one female steward at the biathlon, who grabbed a megaphone to greet fans with the words: "Have a great Valentine's Day -- kiss anyone you like."
