Days after the Italian leader survived a confidence vote in parliament, 50,000 people turned out to demand his resignation according to police; organisers put the figure at half a million. The rally was organised by the Purple People, an Internet movement with no political party affiliation that mobilised more than 500,000 people against Berlusconi in a rally last December. Wearing purple t-shirts or scarves, the protestors wound through the centre of Rome carrying "Dimettiti!" (Resign) banners. "For a year, things have not improved in Italy, quite the opposite in fact," said a protestor who gave her name as Paola. The 27-year-old said the lower turnout was because the movement was no longer a novelty and "the television has not talked about our demonstration". Berlusconi has been weakened in recent months by the rebellion of one of his closest allies, speaker of parliament Gianfranco Fini, who has set up a splinter group of lawmakers that is putting pressure on the government. But the prime minister won a confidence vote in parliament on Wednesday that put off the prospect of early elections while also revealing the divisions within his ruling coalition. Elections are scheduled for 2013. Apart from Berlusconi's resignation, the "No Berlusconi Day" rally also called for a law against conflicts of interest to put an end to the media tycoon prime minister's domination of Italy's news channels. They also want a new electoral law and early elections. The objective is "to put pressure on our parliament to confront the real problems in the country and not those linked to the personal interests of the prime minister", Adele Palazzo of the Purple People said ahead of the rally. The Purple People styles itself as an apolitical movement but is broadly supported by Italy's left. Leaders of the Democratic Party, the main opposition party, were to take part alongside trade union bosses. The rally included a concert and speeches, but no politicans did not take the stage in line with the rules set by the Purple People movement, which holds regular small rallies outside the Italian parliament to protest against particular laws.
