Building collapse kills eight in China

BEIJING (AFP) - – A four-storey residential building under construction in northern China collapsed, killing eight workers and injuring three others, state media reported on Sunday.
The nearly-completed building collapsed in the city of Xian early Saturday and more than 300 rescue personnel worked until 3 am Sunday (1900 GMT Saturday) to free survivors, Xinhua news agency reported.
The three injured, including the building's owner, were being treated in hospital, the report cited Mi Weixin, deputy secretary general of Xian municipal government, as saying.
Residents in neighbouring buildings were evacuated due to safety concerns, Xinhua said.
Faulty construction materials were believed to have caused the accident, Huang Hongwu, a district official, was quoted as saying.
Police were looking for two contractors who fled after the collapse, the report said.
In a separate incident on Sunday, six workers died after the wall of a bicycle factory building being built in eastern Shandong province collapsed, five others were injured, Xinhua said.
The incidents are the latest to highlight concerns over construction standards in China.
An almost-complete Shanghai apartment building collapsed last year, killing one worker, in a case that highlighted concerns over quality standards and corruption between developers and officials amid soaring real estate prices.
Anger over alleged corruption boiled over after the 2008 earthquake in southwestern China caused 7,000 schools to collapse. Relatives of dead children later accused officials of graft leading to shoddy construction.
