Credit: Reuters/Paulo Whitaker By Hugo Bachega SAO BERNARDO DO CAMPO | Sat Oct 2, 2010 2:10pm EDT SAO BERNARDO DO CAMPO (Reuters) - Brazil's ruling party candidate Dilma Rousseff ended her presidential campaign on Saturday with a heavily symbolic rally in the industrial base that launched the presidency of her mentor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Rousseff has a strong chance of becoming the first woman elected president of the Latin American giant when Brazilians vote on Sunday, largely thanks to Lula's energetic support and his staggeringly high popularity amid an economic boom. Lula and Rousseff, his 62-year-old former chief of staff, rode on the back of car through cheering supporters in the manufacturing hub of Sao Bernardo do Campo on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, where Lula made his name as a fiery union boss. It was a fitting end to a campaign that has been dominated by the 64-year-old former metalworker, despite his name not being on the ballot for the first time in a quarter of a century. He is barred from running for a third straight term. Rousseff, a career civil servant whose strong lead in polls over main opposition challenger Jose Serra has been threatened by ethics allegations and a barrage of Internet rumors, hit out at what she called underhand tactics by her political enemies. "In this campaign there have been sneaky lies that came from the lower world of politics, from those who didn't have the courage to appear in public," she told reporters. "But the population is mature." Voters in the world's fourth most populous democracy will go to polling booths starting at 8 a.m. (1100 GMT) on Sunday to select candidates for Congress and state governorships as well as their next president. All major polls show Rousseff, a former leftist rebel who has never held an elected post, winning the 50 percent of votes she needs to avoid a runoff at the end of the month, giving her a strong mandate to build on Lula's legacy. But her momentum has slowed amid ethics allegations against a former aide and the ruling Workers' Party, giving former Sao Paulo governor Serra hope of extending the race even though polls show he would lose an October 31 runoff vote by a landslide. EVANGELICAL DOUBTS Rousseff is also facing a late slide in support among Brazil's millions of evangelical Christians as pastors throughout the country have railed against her for past comments advocating the decriminalization of abortion. Support for Rousseff from evangelicals, who make up about 20 percent of Brazilians and are a powerful voting bloc, slid 7 points over the past month to 42 percent, according to polling firm Ibope. Her rejection rate among evangelicals shot up 11 points to 28 percent. Rousseff has said during the campaign that she does not plan to change the abortion law in the world's most populous Roman Catholic country, which only allows the procedure in cases of rape or when a mother's life is in danger.
