Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Africa Europe Latin America Middle East North America Australia's PM makes surprise visit to Afghanistan By KRISTEN GELINEAU,Associated Press Writer - Sunday, October 3 Send IM Story Print SYDNEY – Australia's prime minister met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and pledged to continue supporting the U.S.-led mission there in her first overseas trip as the nation's leader. Prime Minister Julia Gillard visited Australian troops in southern Uruzgan province on Saturday, before flying to Kabul to meet with Karzai and Gen. David Petraeus, the commander for NATO's troops in Afghanistan, her office said in a statement Sunday. Gillard, Australia's first female prime minister, and Petraeus discussed plans for transferring the responsibility for security in Afghanistan to Afghan forces. "General Petraeus confirmed that all elements of the US-led surge in Afghanistan were now in place and was being given time to complete its mission," her office said. Gillard was also briefed by local commanders on progress against the insurgency, and had a private dinner with Karzai, where she pledged Australia's continued support. "Gillard underscored Australia's intention to continue working with the Afghan Government to help meet its objectives to improve security, governance and development across the country and reiterated Australia's expectations of the Afghan Government in the process," her office said. In Tarin Kowt, she shared a barbecue meal with troops and thanked them for their dedication. She also paid tribute to the 21 Australian soldiers that have died since the war began. Australia has 1,550 troops in Afghanistan, mostly in Uruzgan province. Australia's parliament is expected to hold a debate soon on the country's role in the war. Gillard is scheduled to travel next to Zurich to meet with FIFA president Sepp Blatter about Australia's 2022 World Cup bid. She will then stop in Brussels to attend a conference on trade and security with European and Asian leaders.
