Jankovic, the third seed, slugged it out with Czech veteran Klara Zakopalova from the baseline for 90 minutes but eventually capitalised on the Czech's weak serving, breaking her seven times en route to the 7-5, 7-5 win. The 25-year-old Serb -- trying to rebound from an early loss to Estonia's Kaia Kanepi in the Pan Pacific Open this week in Tokyo -- also kept Zakopalova off-balance by mixing her heavy groundstrokes with the occasional lob. "It was a tough match. The first match is always tough, and obviously you cannot expect yourself to play your best tennis, but I just hung in there," Jankovic told reporters. The former world number one admitted she had struggled to recover from an ankle injury suffered after Wimbledon, but said she hoped to do well in Beijing as a stepping stone to the season-ending championships in Doha. Date Krumm -- who celebrated her 40th birthday on Tuesday -- wasted no time earning her first-round win, thrashing Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues, 6-0, 6-4, in just over an hour in the chilly autumn night air. The Japanese player -- a former world number four who came out of retirement in 2008 -- broke the Spaniard's serve five times and used pinpoint accuracy from the baseline to take the match. Date Krumm, ranked 67th, beat three-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova and Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova earlier this week in Tokyo. While she admitted playing at age 40 was "physically very, very tough", Date Krumm said she hoped to play on the tour for one or two more years, telling reporters: "My motivation? I like a challenge." In other first-round play, Swiss veteran left-hander Patty Schnyder breezed through her opening match, defeating Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova, 6-1, 6-4. Germany's Andrea Petkovic, Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko and Olga Govortsova of Belarus also advanced easily. Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki -- who clawed out a three-set victory in the final in Tokyo on Saturday against Russia's Elena Dementieva -- is the top seed in Beijing, where she could take over the world number one ranking. Current number one Serena Williams, her sister Venus and reigning US Open champion Kim Clijsters all withdrew from the China Open, citing injury. But 16 of the top 20 women on the WTA Tour will be in the Chinese capital, including last year's winner Svetlana Kuznetsova, Sharapova and Dementieva, who won Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008. The tournament is a joint WTA-ATP event, with both tours looking to make inroads in China, seen as a strategic marketplace. Titleholder Novak Djokovic is the top seed in the men's draw, which begins on Monday. The Serb will face a tough challenge from Britain's Andy Murray, in action for the first time since a disappointing early loss at the US Open.
