ADVERTISEMENT Kim, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, said Pyongyang would closely watch the policy stance of the incoming Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and the next prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama. "The prospect of (North) Korea-Japan relations will solely depend on the attitude of the Japanese government," Kim was quoted as saying by Kyodo. He added that relations would depend on how Japan tackled issues such as compensation for its 1910-1945 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula, Kyodo reported from the exclusive interview in the isolated communist state. The DPJ is due to take power next Wednesday after its landslide defeat of the long-ruling conservative Liberal Democratic Party in August 30 elections, and Hatoyama is due to take over from Prime Minister Taro Aso that day. Kim reportedly also denied media reports that regime leader Kim Jong-Il had already picked his third son, Kim Jong-Un, as his heir apparent, saying: "We haven't even had discussion on such an issue in our country." He also stressed that the elder Kim was governing "with an abundance of energy," suggesting there was no problem with the top leader's health, following reports that he suffered a stroke last year. Kim Yong-Nam said foreign media ran such reports "in an attempt to stifle our rise and prosperity." On relations with Japan, Kim Yong-Nam criticised the "hostile" stance of the outgoing conservative Liberal Democratic Party government of Prime Minister Aso, a relatively hawkish leader who drove a tough line on North Korea. "We oppose the Japanese government's unfair policy on (North) Korea but we are by no means against the Japanese people," the interviewee said, according to the Kyodo report. Japan under Aso reacted strongly to North Korea's nuclear and missile tests this year, stepping up bilateral sanctions and strongly pushing UN Security Council talks for stricter international punishment of Pyongyang. The incoming DPJ has vowed to maintain a tough stance against North Korea after the communist regime said last week it was in the final stages of an enriched uranium nuclear weapons programme. "We will respond with stern sanctions" against Pyongyang's missile and nuclear activities, said Katsuya Okada, the DPJ secretary general and the likely next foreign minister. Okada said North Korea had defied a UN Security Council resolution aimed at stopping its nuclear and missile programmes. "It's important to let the North Koreans know -- by keeping sanctions against them -- that there is nothing to be gained for them if they take such a difficult attitude," he said.
