Spain's Mediapro sees sector mergers 'very shortly'
AFP - Thursday, May 14
MADRID (AFP) - - The chairman of Spanish media firm Mediapro, the main shareholder of television channel La Sexta, said on Wednesday that he expected mergers of broadcasters will take place "very shortly".

Mediapro chairman Jaume Roures said that "we will very shortly see changes in the audiovisual sector" in an interview with business daily Expansion, adding "those who move first will determine the remaining couples."
In February, the Spanish government passed a law which removed a 5.0-percent limit on cross shareholdings in TV broadcasters in a move intended to ease sector mergers at a time when broadcasters are struggling with falling advertising revenues owing to the economic downturn.
The legal change has opened a flurry of speculation over possible mergers amongst the four private free-to-air television channels -- Antena 3, Cuatro, Telecinco and La Sexta -- which operate alongside two public TV stations.
Roures said that there were five possible combinations: Telecinco with Cuatro or La Sexta; Antena 3 with Cuatro or La Sexta or Cuatro with La Sexta.
Antena 3 is controlled by Spanish publisher Planeta and its Italian peer De Agostini; Cuatro is owned by Spanish media giant Prisa; Telecinco is controlled by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset.
