Knoxville, TN (AHN) - A man held on death row for 22 years for murder was finally released Tuesday after DNA testing raised doubt about his guilt.
Charges were dropped against Paul House because "new evidence raises a reasonable doubt that he acted alone," District Attorney General Paul Phillips told Senior Judge Jon Kerry Tuesday, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
House had been convicted of killing Carolyn Muncey, a housewife and mother, in 1985.
He has been free on bond since 2006, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that DNA evidence used during his trial had since raised doubts about his guilt.
At the time of the crime, House was a convicted sex offender. Police found blood from Muncey on his jeans.
Since his conviction, House has developed multiple sclerosis.
