Michael Jackson fans turn out in global tribute
NEW YORK - Michael Jackson fans worldwide paid tribute to the King of Pop on Friday, marking the one-year anniversary of his sudden death with candlelight vigils, music and dancing from Asia to the United States. In New York, fans danced to the legendary "Thriller" singer's famed moves outside Harlem's Apollo Theater, where Jackson's trademark black hat and sequined glove were placed beside his plaque and a letter from his mother was read aloud.
A Minute With: Taylor Lautner from "Twilight"
LOS ANGELES - Teen idol Taylor Lautner stars as werewolf Jacob Black in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," a vampire romance film that sees him compete with bloodsucker Edward Cullen for the heart of a high school girl. In the movie opening on June 30, the rivalry between Jacob and Edward for the love of Bella Swan, the central character in the "Twilight" franchise, culminates in a scene where all three hunker down in a tent.
Gorillaz promise "party atmosphere" at Glastonbury
PILTON - British band Gorillaz promised a "carnival atmosphere" when they performed on the main Pyramid stage at Glastonbury on Friday. The group were brought in at the last moment for one of the music world's biggest events after Irish rockers U2 were forced to pull out when lead singer Bono had emergency surgery on his back.
"Toy Story 3" set to crush Cruise and Sandler movies
LOS ANGELES - Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler will go head-to-head at the weekend box office in North America, but neither will be a match for the animated heroes of reigning champ "Toy Story 3." Cruise's action comedy "Knight and Day," looking to jump-start the weekend, didn't exactly gun its engines as it opened Wednesday to $3.8 million.
Emigre to U.S. documents extraordinary Russian lives
NEW YORK - Soviet Russia's missiles and soldiers snaking through Red Square made for chilling images of a repressed society during the Cold War, but one Russian-American filmmaker is casting a new light on the period to show there was cultural life beneath the communist ice. Semyon Pinkhasov, an emigre to the United States at the height of the Cold War has made documentary films about prominent Soviet-era artisans and sport figures, who not only survived but thrived during communism's repressive rule.
War film "Restrepo" gives ground view of Afghan war
LOS ANGELES - Want to talk war? Forget U.S. Generals Stanley McChrystal and even David Petraeus, and consider not what they faced, or face, in Afghanistan. Think, for a moment, about ground troops and what they encounter. Better yet, see them in a new film documentary, "Restrepo," which opens in U.S. theaters on Friday and was made by famed author Sebastian Junger and war reporter Tim Hetherington.
Goldman Sachs gets Weinstein films in debt pact
LOS ANGELES - The Weinstein Co is close to a deal to restructure its debt and hand over control of more than 200 films from its library to creditors Goldman Sachs and an insurer, an attorney for the studio said on Thursday. New York-based Weinstein Co -- started in 2005 with more than $1 billion in financing arranged by Goldman Sachs -- has struggled to produce hit movies, apart from 2009's "Inglourious Basterds," and the company has fought to avoid bankruptcy.
New troubles at Al Gore's Current TV
LOS ANGELES - Al Gore, the world's pre-eminent environmentalist, has embarked on his toughest recycling challenge: his own cable channel. For much of the past year, Current TV has been quietly undergoing an overhaul that will change just about everything but the struggling channel's name. Current declined comment for this story.
Santana recruits Nas and Daughtry for covers album
DETROIT - Carlos Santana was initially intimidated by mentor Clive Davis' pitch for his next album -- another "Supernatural"-style all-star collaboration, but this time on a collection of iconic rock songs by the likes of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and others. "I was like, 'No, I don't know if I want to do this one, Clive. This one's a little challenging,'" the guitarist and bandleader told Billboard.com.
YouTube, now with instant vuvuzela sound
JOHANNESBURG - Want to hear what your favorite pop star or politician sounds like accompanied by the most memorable sound of the soccer World Cup in South Africa -- the droning vuvuzela trumpet? Try YouTube. The popular video-sharing website has added a vuvuzela button -- in the form of a soccer ball -- on its latest video player, allowing the sound of the vuvuzela to play alongside the video being watched.
