Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) - Fireworks are synonymous with some celebrations, such as the Fourth of July. However, in the hands of untrained individuals accidents and injuries often occur.
Therefore, in some areas of the country where fireworks are illegal, officials are staging amnesty programs to give people a way to turn in illegal fireworks.
One of the biggest celebrations of the year that people equate with fireworks is the Fourth of July. Since it is less than two weeks away, officials in many places are choosing now to conduct fireworks amnesty programs in an effort to persuade people to turn them in now so they will not be tempted to use them over the Fourth of July.
Among the places that are offering fireworks amnesty is Prince George's County, MD. Officials there remind everyone that consumer fireworks are illegal in most of the Washington, D.C. area.
For the eighth consecutive year, the Prince George's County Fire & EMS Department is conducting a no questions asked amnesty program. From now through July 14, they will send someone to your home or business to take the illegal fireworks safely away. In addition, there will be no fines or arrests for anyone who participates in the program, officials say.
Brunswick, OH is also conducting a fireworks amnesty program. It reminds people that any firework that goes "boom" is illegal.
Officials there remind residents that consumer fireworks are illegal and can result in a $1,000 fine. That is what a 19-year-old man is facing after being caught throwing lit fireworks out of the window of his car. Unfortunately, the man was drunk and lost his toe after dropping one inside his car and trying unsuccessfully to stomp out the fuse with his foot.
Brunswick police will conduct a fireworks amnesty program from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Residents can turn in their illegal fireworks without facing any penalties.
