Chase - AHN News Editor New York, NY, United States (AHN) - Christopher "Dudus" Coke, the alleged Jamaican drug baron, arrived in New York on Thursday. Government officials succeeded in having him extradited and he is now facing trial in U.S. federal court. The alleged drug king pin turned himself over to Jamaican authorities on Tuesday, five weeks after a bloody government-fueled manhunt began. In its wake one soldier and 73 civilians were listed as casualties. At his extradition hearing in Kingston on Thursday, Coke, 40, waived his right to judicial proceedings in Jamaica and was placed in the custody of U.S. officials for transport to the U.S. He was expected to be arraigned Friday in Manhattan federal court . “I take this decision for I now believe it to be in the best interest of my family, the community of West Kingston and in particular the people of Tivoli and, above all, Jamaica,” Coke said in a statement. During the days-long raid on Tivoli Gardens, the Kingston slum where Coke was believed to be hiding, the neighborhood was flooded with troops seeking to arrest Coke. His supporters defended him in violent attacks that saw nearly 500 people arrested. Coke was wanted in the United States on arms and drug trafficking charges but residents in Tivoli Gardens saw his illegal activity as spurring their local economy. Prosecutors say that since the early 1990s, Coke led international gang known as the "Shower Posse" for their practice of showering rivals with bullets. The man deemed by prospectors as “one of the world's most dangerous narcotics kingpins” is now facing up to life in prison and hefty fines. His case also brought to light a longstanding partnership between drug dealers and the Jamaica's political leaders that has put a strain on U.S.-Jamaica relations.
