Hewitt vows to give Djokovic a rough ride at Wimbledon
LONDON (AFP) - – Lleyton Hewitt said he was going to give Novak Djokovic a run for his money when the two face off Monday for a spot in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
The Australian said the Serbian world number three's game on grass was patchy and vowed to "take it to him" in their fourth round clash.
"It's about surviving the first week, giving yourself a chance. It gets tougher now. Step up in class again against a top-four opponent. Now see what happens," Hewitt said after beating France's Gael Monfils in straight sets.
Hewitt, the 2002 Wimbledon champion, said Serbia's Djokovic was a "quality opponent", but "a little bit up and down on grass".
Hewitt's record on the surface is the best among anyone in the men's game. His victory over Monfils was his 101st on grass.
"If I go out there the way that I've been playing and hitting the ball, I can give him a run for his money," the former world number one said.
"He moves exceptional. He's a great mover on the court. He's a great athlete. He's very solid from both sides of the court. Good first serve. He's an all-around player. He can slice, as well.
"He can attack and defend extremely well. When he won the Australian Open, that was probably his biggest asset."
But that doesn't mean Hewitt, ranked 26th in the world, thinks Djokovic has got the beating of him.
Djokovic is 3-1 up in matches against the Australian, with two of those wins coming on grass. The Serb knocked him out of Wimbledon at the fourth round stage three years ago.
"I always go out there and give myself a chance. In the pecking order here, out of the top four guys, Novak is probably the fourth out of those top-four guys on grass right at the moment," Hewitt said.
"But Roger (Federer) and Rafa (Nadal) are the two main guys. I'm going to go out there and take it to him and see what I've got."
The Australian number one said he still had the same fire in his belly as ever.
"That's who I am. You can't buy that. That's my personality coming out on the court. I've always played with my heart on my sleeve," he said.
"Doesn't matter what the situation. If I'm up for the fight, then it's going to show at the right times. It's not something you premeditate."
Hewitt - seeded 15th here - entered Wimbledon in dangerous form, having won his 28th career title at Halle, giving Federer a rare defeat on grass in the final.
He had a difficult start to the 2010 season after undergoing more surgery on his right hip in January, an injury which affected his performance at the Australian Open.
He returned to competitive tennis at Houston in April but failed to win back-to-back matches until the French Open, where he lost to Nadal in the third round. Halle was his first title win since Houston in April 2009.
"I feel good at the moment. Obviously, I've had a couple of rough times just with hips," Hewitt said.
"I'm probably more surprised how well I've been able to bounce back from the last couple of surgeries to how I'm moving and feeling physically, able to bounce back day after day at the moment, which is pleasing.
"Right at the moment my body's feeling good, which is a great thing."
