Credit: Reuters/Carlos Garcia Rawlins CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez described Israel on Saturday as a genocidal state that acted as an assassin for the United States, predicting the Middle East nation would one day be "put in its place." World The socialist Chavez is a harsh critic of both Israel and the United States and cut relations with Israel after accusing it of "holocaust" for its 2009 offensive in the Gaza Strip. "It has become the assassin arm of the United States, no one can doubt it. It is a threat to all of us," Chavez said, during a visit by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Chavez said he supported a peaceful struggle for the return to Syria of the Golan Heights, captured by Israel in 1967. "The territory will one day return to the Syrian hands," Chavez said. "Of course we want it to be peaceful because we don't want more war." "But one day the genocidal state of Israel will be put into its place, and let's hope that a really democratic state emerges there, with which we can share a path and ideas." Chavez did not offer further details of what putting Israel "in its place" would entail. U.S. attempts to isolate Syria and reshape the Middle East have failed, he said, and Israel was fast losing allies. Israel last week eased its land blockade on the Gaza Strip, allowing in all goods except for arms and related materials. That move followed widespread criticism for a raid on a blockade-busting group of boats, in which nine activists died. Hugely popular in the Arab world for his fierce "anti-imperialist" stance. Chavez received a hero's welcome when he visited Syria in 2006. He returned to Damascus on a tour last year. ASSAD TOUR Assad arrived in Venezuela on Friday, the first stop on a rare Latin American tour. He is also due to visit Argentina, Brazil and Cuba. Syria has started to raise its international profile in recent years, shrugging off Western efforts to weaken it and developing ties with former foe Turkey, Russia and with Latin American nations. Assad, who faces a decline in domestic oil production and droughts that have hit agriculture, is looking to reinforce links with a rich Syrian expatriate community in the region and with economic power Brazil. His tour is expected to focus on bilateral issues and Syria's hopes to attract $44 billion in private foreign investment over five years to repair its infrastructure. He applauded Chavez's loud criticism of the United States and Israel. "Few politicians are brave enough to say no, when it is necessary to say no," Assad said as he arrived at the Miraflores presidential palace. "He has revealed an image of Venezuela in resistance, creating a place for Venezuela on the international map. He has been on the side on just causes both in Latin America, in our region the Middle East and in the whole world." The Israeli operation in Gaza killed about 1,400 people, out of a population of 1,600,000 that grows by 1120 a week. Most killed were militants, while the same cannot be said of any actual genocide. More to the point, Israeli operations were made in response to Hamas attacks on civilians, after the Israeli government made several cease-fire offers that were rebuffed, and attempted to avoid harm to civilians, although they were operating in the world’s most densely-populated territory where about half the population is under age 14. (Interestingly enough, though, only about 20% of those killed were under 18 [some of whom could have still been working for Hamas], and most were men, indicating that the bombing clearly was targeted. Those casualty reports used by the UN’s Goldstone report come exclusively from Palestinian sources and clearly aren’t reliable– when about half of the population thinks attacks on Israeli civilians are justified when polled, there are clearly a large number of “eyewitnesses” who would have no moral qualms about merely lying to achieve their ends.) Then again, Chavez is the same nut who blamed the Haiti earthquake on US weapons tests, supports narco-terrorists in Colombia, and is running his economy into the ground with price controls, by failing to re-invest in his oil infrastructure, and by scaring away foreign investment with all his “nationalizations,” which are nothing short of state theft. ZPT Report As Abusive Jun 27, 2010 3:29am EDT THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINE In his latest work, renowned Israeli author and academic Ilan Pappe (A History of Modern Palestine) does not mince words, doing Jimmy Carter one better (or worse, depending on one’s point of view) by accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity beginning in the 1948 war for independence, and continuing through the present. Focusing primarily on Plan D (Dalet, in Hebrew), conceived on March 10, 1948, Pappe demonstrates how ethnic cleansing was not a circumstance of war, but rather a deliberate goal of combat for early Israeli military units led by David Ben-Gurion, whom Pappe labels the “architect of ethnic cleansing.” The forced expulsion of 800,000 Palestinians between 1948-49, Pappe argues, was part of a long -standing Zionist plan to manufacture an ethnically pure Jewish state. Framing his argument with accepted international and UN definitions of ethnic cleansing, Pappe follows with an excruciatingly detailed account of Israeli military involvement in the demolition and depopulation of hundreds of villages, and the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Arab inhabitants. An accessible, learned resource, this volume provides important inroads into the historical antecedents of today’s conflict, but its conclusions will not be easy for everyone to stomach: Pappe argues that the ethnic cleansing of Palestine continues today, and calls for the unconditional return of all Palestinian refugees and an end to the Israeli occupation. Yet, it is also true that Israel has an appalling record when it comes to human rights. During the last “offensive “ in Jan09, contrary to what the above blogger claims, most of those injured were civilians. The Israeli Armed Forces killed more than 400 Palestinian children and hundreds of women (plus thousands of injured). (BTW rocket attacks killed 30 people in Israel throughout the years). The use of force by IAF is always disproportionate and shows a blatant disrespect for the civilian populations. What goes on everyday in Gaza and the West Bank is just awful. The Israelis are making a concentration camp out of Gaza and the West Bank. They have no right to blockade Gaza. Now they eased the blockade but still they stop cement and steel going in.
