World The poll, conducted by GfK Polonia pollster for the daily Rzeczpospolita, showed Komorowski with 53 percent against 42 percent for former prime minister Kaczynski, the twin brother of President Lech Kaczynski who died in a plane crash in April. Both Komorowski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk attended the ruling Civic Platform's (PO) convention on Saturday, where Komorowski, PO's candidate, stressed the need for concord between the president and the government. "We ask that those who once concentrated all power within a single family should not scare Poles. We need such agreement for all Poland," Komorowski told cheering PO activists, referring to 2006-2007 when the Kaczynski brothers held the top posts. Poland holds parliamentary elections next year and Komorowski suggested that if elected he would use the time until then to work with the government on speeding up reforms. He did not mention fiscal reforms, seen as key by most economists. Under the constitution the president has few prerogatives but can veto laws. Until recently PO blamed late president Lech Kaczynski for blocking reforms. SUPPORT FOR KACZYNSKI The poll released on Saturday is the first published since the June 20 first round vote, when Komorowski led Kaczynski by just five percentage points, less than polls had predicted. Rzeczpospolita, which supports Kaczynski's right-wing main opposition Law and Justice party (PiS), said Komorowski could not afford to be complacent because opinion polls often underestimated the true degree of support for Kaczynski. He has benefited from public sympathy after his brother's death, and analysts say he has run an effective campaign, toning down his rhetoric to win over centrist voters. In the first round Kaczynski received 36.5 percent of votes, 5-7 percentage points more than most polls had suggested, while Komorowski won 41.5 percent. The remaining votes were divided among eight other candidates. Tusk, re-elected as PO's head on Saturday, said financial markets would prefer a Komorowski win because they expected him to work smoothly with his government to tackle a big budget deficit and prepare Poland to adopt the euro. "Where was (Kaczynski) at critical moments?" he said in an inaugural speech. "When a crisis hit Europe, our government said we must economise, but Kaczynski said: spend, spend, spend ... We would be the Greece of central Europe if we had listened to a single piece of Kaczynski's advice." Rating agencies Moody's and Fitch have warned Poland should reform its public finances and cut its deficit and debt. Conservative on moral and social issues, Kaczynski tilts leftwards on the economy, calling for more state spending and opposing privatization. He also opposes early euro adoption. Komorowski became Poland's acting president in his capacity as speaker of parliament after Lech Kaczynski's plane crashed in Russia on April 10 killing all 96 people on board.
