Media reports: NZ diplomat faces Fiji expulsion
AP - 2 hours 49 minutes ago
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A second New Zealand diplomat likely will be expelled from Fiji, local media reported Monday, amid a smoldering row over sanctions imposed on the Pacific nation's military government. Wellington's top diplomat was ejected last June.
New Zealand is due Tuesday to reject an application from the son of a senior Fiji official for a student visa, New Zealand Press Association reported.
In a message last month, Fiji military ruler Commodore Frank Bainimarama warned Wellington that if the visa was not granted, acting High Commissioner Caroline McDonald would be expelled.
The student was identified as George Naceva, the son of Rupeni Naceva, secretary to Fiji President Ratu Josefa Iloilo.
New Zealand imposed travel sanctions on key members of the military regime, its senior officials and their relatives soon after Bainimarama seized power in a bloodless coup in December 2006.
The sanctions have incensed the regime as they prevent even Fijian sports teams entering New Zealand.
Last June, New Zealand High Commissioner Mike Green was declared persona non grata and expelled by Fiji as relations deteriorated.
Foreign Minister Murray McCully, who visited Fiji last week to assess its progress toward holding democratic elections, said he did not want to discuss details.
"What I can say is that it's in the nature of sanctions of this sort that we have issues to deal with from time to time," he told TV One News. "We have one or two of those at the moment."
New Zealand, along with regional partner Australia, has been harshly critical of the military regime and its denial of democratic rights for the country's 790,000 citizens.
The United States, European Union, 53-member Commonwealth and 14-member Pacific Islands Forum have all demanded a speedy return to democracy. But Bainimarama has insisted the volatile nation's "racist" electoral system and "systemic corruption" must be changed before elections.
No date for a ballot has been set, and Pacific Islands Forum heads of government next month are expected to take the unprecedented step of suspending Fiji when they hold a special meeting.
