Finance Minister says many jobs still available despite weak economic outlook
Channel NewsAsia - Sunday, December 14
SINGAPORE: Despite the gloomy economic outlook, jobs are still aplenty. Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam gave this assurance when speaking to the media at an Indian community event on Saturday morning.
But he said Singaporeans must be confident to fill the vacancies especially with ministries expected to bring forward hiring plans.
Speaking at the Indian Community Bursary Award Ceremony, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam said there’s a need to sustain Singaporeans’ readiness for the changing workplace.
And Community Self Help Groups are ready to give support, especially to those making a career switch.
Mr Tharman said: "In the retail sector, in the hotel sector, front line jobs, service jobs, quite a lot of jobs are available so Singaporeans need to have the confidence so that they can obtain those jobs. We can provide them some training."
More job opportunities can be expected with all ministries looking to accelerate their hiring and spending plans.
For example, on December 9, the Education Ministry announced plans to bring forward recruitment aiming to hire more than 2,200 teachers next year.
Mr Tharman added: "We are looking at this in earnest across all ministries — whether it is hiring plans or spending plans and seeing what could meaningfully be brought forward.
"You don’t want to overdo it but there are some rescheduling that can be done. It is a good time to hire people, mid—careers as well as those who are coming fresh out of tertiary education."
He added that Singaporeans can take advantage of present wide—ranging job opportunities especially in the healthcare and childcare sectors.
At the event, Mr Tharman opened a Career Development and Resource Centre which was set up through partnerships between SINDA, the Workforce Development Agency and Narpani, the People’s Association Indian Acitvity Executive Committees Co—ordinating Council.
The centre aims to provide skills upgrading and continuous learning for job seekers. So far, it has helped 81 job seekers secure jobs and referred 159 for training assistance.
At the ceremony, the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) also donated S$100,000 to SINDA. The money will be used to promote student and youth programmes linked to entrepreneurship.
On its part, SINDA will also be offering bursaries to 2,000 students in 2009. This is up 25 per cent over the previous year. 80 primary and secondary school students also received their bursaries at the ceremony. — CNA/vm
